Expose Em Expose Em
Song Adressing all the fake singers in the music industry, somebody had to expose em, and I have no problem doing so.....
For a newcomer, R&B soul singer Jovan Dais seems to have it all: a seductive voice, stunning good looks, a rousing ten-piece band, his own recording facility, a gift for songwriting and an overall down-to-earth appeal. However, look closer at the 25-year-old and you’ll realize that every one of his blessings have been paid for with lots of hard work and an even greater amount of faith.
Born in the Bronx but raised in Atlanta since the age of six, Jovan Dais has been around music all of his life. He grew up listening to his mother’s Whispers and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes records, while his father worked in the music industry as an artist manager of the Latin group The Barrio Boyzz. His father’s connections enabled Jovan and his brother to hang around back-in-the-day celebrities like late 80’s kid group The Boys and producer Teddy Riley. As a teen, Jovan played drums in his high school marching band and performed in several music groups, including a gospel rap clique, God’s Little Angels, for which he also produced tracks and wrote hooks. “One day after singing the hook on one of the tracks, I thought to myself, that sounds pretty good, I want to be a singer” Jovan reflects, on how he got his start as an artist. Although the group would eventually disband, this experience would prepare Jovan for his journey as a soloist.
Frustrated with spending hard earned money at overpriced studio’s and ending up with poor quality demos, Jovan realized he needed his own environment to make satisfying, creative music. After the property owner of his loft apartment showed him an empty 3,000 square foot warehouse loft, Jovan’s creative vision took off and he enrolled in carpentry classes at Atlanta Technical College. Three months later Jovan would receive a $5,000 loan from his father, Jovan then dropped out of school, moved into the warehouse, purchased some wood and recording equipment and began construction on his own studio, with a limited budget he bare-handedly built a bedroom and recording booth, where he immediately began making records with the help of known producers like the local legend DJ Toomp and Sanchez (Xscape). This studio has since been expanded to a five bedroom, two booth recording facility with two floors and spans over 6,000 square feet.
Jovan made his first demo in 2001 and with the help of his father was able to audition for label execs at Def Jam, Elektra, Motown but nothing panned out and he wasn’t signed. During this time he garnered the attention of a few independent labels and in 2002, Jovan signed a deal with Chardino Records, a small, independent label out of Boston. Though the company folded after three months, Jovan met an artist manager from Belgium who took interest in him and flew the singer to Europe to work with several producers for almost two months. Homesick, Jovan wrote the heartfelt hit “Fedex” while overseas and upon his stateside return, he recorded the song with producer Kevin Hamilton known as K-Hamp. Jovan was also able to work with established producers such as Troy Taylor (Aretha Franklin, Tyrese) and Steve Estervene (Joe, Montell Jordan).
In 2003, Jovan compiled a seven-track EP called Simplicity, which featured “Fedex” as well as “Chose Me” produced by Sanchez. He sold the CD on the street and over the Internet thru CD Baby. During that time, he also began performing around Atlanta and was the opening act for both So So Def’s Anthony Hamilton and the Bronner Bros. Comedy Show which drew an audience of 10,000. Naturally, Jovan’s name began to circulate around the Atlanta music scene, which led him to a joint venture deal in May 2004 with independent label/marketing firm Cloud 9 Entertainment. Through Cloud 9, Jovan was able to work with producer Ryan Leslie (Britney Spears, Beyonce, New Edition) and former Bad Boy producers Deric “D-Dot” Angelettie, J-Dub and Stevie J. Jordan, who produced Jovan’s first single, “Need You” which featured former Bad Boy rapper Loon. This song generated national airplay and began to solidify Jovan as the next superstar out of Atlanta, but financial difficulties stopped the momentum and the companies eventually separated.
Now, after going through two independent deals Jovan has developed as an artist and is ready to get his shot with a major label. While finishing his debut album tentatively titled King of Hearts, featuring the hit single “Gotta Get To My Baby” produced by DJ Toomp (T.I. Ludacris) and the inspirational hit “Dust Yourself Off” produced by Chucky Charles, Jovan remains busy flooring audiences with his sultry vocals and dynamic stage show. In the tradition of throwback soul singers, the talented balladeer performs with a ten-piece live band and even plays the guitar during the tender song “Life Without You” produced by HITCO producer K-Fam (Boyz II Men, 112).
“I told myself one day that there’s no such thing as magic,” he says wisely. “With magic, you hope and wait to see if something’s gonna work out. I believe that if you put in the work and plan things out, you’ll get results.” And for Jovan, the result will be superstardom. Indeed, Jovan is proof that perseverance does pay off.Anything else?
