Quiz me. From: Nox Posted: 5/15/2004 10:28:47 PM Message Detail Since I started to come here. I think I know very little about composing music. Yet I've been composing for over two years now. Before I started to come here I thought I knew a lot about composing music. All of you are telling me that my songs sound very random and they don't have any structure. I still dont know what musical structure is. I have no clue what you guys are talking about when you say that. My songs are usually fast. Im horrible at writing slow songs. I composed over 50 to 100+ songs during those two years of composing. So anyways I want you to test me on my knowledge of composing. I positive I know nothing. But just test me anyway. --- Leader of the Gran Turismo Elite F1 League Association. Rank: S From: DarkMoogle Posted: 5/16/2004 12:51:08 AM Message Detail What? From: megajoe Posted: 5/16/2004 12:59:48 AM Message Detail Ok, I'll start from the most basic, and move on. What is: Pulse? Rhythm? Tempo? Meter? Pitch? Scale? Interval? Triad? Chord? Key? Mode? Measure? Melody? Tonic? Supertonic? Mediant? Sub-dominant? Dominant? Sub-mediant? Sub-tonic? Leading Tone? Harmony? Monophonic? Homophonic? Polyphonic? Cadence? (PAC, IAC, Half, Phrygian...) Phrase? Phrase Group? Period? Accent? Accidental? Diatonic? Chromatic? Hmmm, that might be good enough to start off with. Someone should say something if I left something really important out, I'm forgetful. Oh yeah, please don't give a definition for all those, that would be rediculous. --- my little webpage - http://home.earthlink.net/josephpost/ From: Nox Posted: 5/18/2004 10:45:41 PM Message Detail Ok, I'll start from the most basic, and move on. From: Ekco Posted: 5/19/2004 2:28:05 PM Message Detail Im no composer by any means. I have played the trumpet for 5 years and just started the guitar (I mean just started), but dude I knew almost all of those musical terms and I dont write nor do I think I could do a good job of writting music. I took a easy A music 1750 class here at LSU and that little quiz that guy wrote was basically that class, an Intro to music and music appreciation. See if you your school offers any music classes, after you take a class you listen to music a totally different way it also might help with your composing. An if you are seriousabout it consider taking more in depth classes. --- PC3dmark03(4436)http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=2051081 From: Immorsal50 Posted: 5/20/2004 11:48:52 AM Message Detail some excellent points from the post above... ...to expand on one of his big points; not only will you be able to listen to music in a different way (be that a good or bad thing), but you'll also be able to TALK about your music in a different way (that is definitely a good thing). Just because you take some music classes focusing on different types of music doesn't mean you have to abandon the type of music you like. It's all related and I think it would be a benefit for you to learn a little more about these terms I think this is a cool topic, btw (still waiting to hear from wally) --- If peeing your pants is cool, consider me miles davis From: Arrogance Is Bliss Posted: 5/20/2004 1:00:27 PM Message Detail Pulse? Um, the beat. What you Tap your foot to. Rhythm? A sequence of single notes/chords with a certain time value and rest combination...(i.e. Eighth-Eighth-Half Rest- Quarter Note, etc.) Tempo? How fast the piece of music is played. BPM. Meter? The time signature of the piece. 4/4, 12/8, etc. Pitch? uh...sort of, what "octave" a certain note is in. (i.e. you can have an A1 and an A2 in vocals, where the A2 has a higher pitch, i think) Scale? A set of intervals of notes (usually seven) that sound good together. Interval? Note Spacing. Minor 2nd, Major 2nd, Minor 3rd, Perfect 4th, Aug 4th/Dim 5th, Perfect 5th, etc. Triad? A chord made of three notes. Chord? Any group of 3 or more notes played together. (this is why power chords aren't technically chords) Key? The "tonal center" of a piece of music. Mode? Transmutations of a scale, where a note would become the leading note of the scale instead of the key note. (Ionian, Dorian, Locrian, Lydian, Myxolydian, Phrygian, and Aeolian) Measure? A set of beats within the time...uh...like 4 beats in 4/4 time would be one measure. Melody? A series of single notes played to form a musical phrase Tonic? Supertonic? Mediant? Sub-dominant? Dominant? Sub-mediant? Sub-tonic? Leading Tone? The interval names for the major scale, I believe. Basically, alternate names for I, II, III, IV, V, VI, and VII Harmony? Musical Device in which two instruments play at the same time, (i think it has to be the same melody) but at different positions in the music. (i.e. a guitar would play the riff after the bass is 3/4 of the way through it...uh, yeah) Monophonic? no idea, but it has something to do with a solo, sorta. Homophonic? um, two instruments playing the same notes together?? Polyphonic? Two or more instruments playing different notes, but still sounding good. Cadence? (PAC, IAC, Half, Phrygian...) Not sure Phrase? not sure Phrase Group? ...a group
