O.verall B.est E.ver A.t S.pittin T.his ... is not an easy title to hold down but OBEAST aka Big Ree has been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to throw his weight around. OBEAST got his start around 13 listening to the Sugar Hill Gang because that was the only rap his mother had in the house. Shortly afterwards, Redman came on the scene and put Newark, NJ on the hip hop map. OBEAST explains one of his early influences, NY was slick, West coast was gangsta but Red was just being himself. This approach to music and songwriting appealed to OBEAST because it was something that came natural. OBEASTs subject matter encompasses baby mama drama, not having enough, moms, getting bent, wildin in the club and his neighborhood environment. The streets of Newark run thru OBEASTs body like veins to capillaries. Newark breeds a hunger that comes from too many broke people trying to getting it at the same time. Newarks Black communities comprise over 50% of the citys total population so there are even more people hungering for the same wants and needs. Bottom line, theres not enough to go around. Children arent allowed to be kids and boys become men at 15. Its this hunger for survival first and ultimately a better way of life that comes across in songs like Pay Attention, Jersey Act and Soul 2 Me. Once Biggie Smalls and Big Pun ushered in the big man era, OBEAST had all justification necessary to proceed with his usual swagger. Its the way that OBEAST carries himself that really separates him as an artist. OBEAST wont be content to be mentioned among the greats, hes been anticipating the weight of his title for some time. Band/artist history
MSE was established as a vehicle to promote the stories that previously went unheard. All to often, fans are subjected to Kevin Costners view of the Indians or Tom Cruises view of Japanese samurais. At My Story Entertainment, thats just not good enough. We want the story told in first person. We want the story told by the person who experienced it. MSE isnt interested in Matthew Brodericks perspective of Black Civil War soldiers; we want to hear it from the soldier.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Enough to fill the frame but not a ham, OBEAST intends to clear the way for the arrival of his P.O.W. (pr. P.O. Dub) family. King Chuk, Big Mic, Ray Boog and Who Dat comprise the P.O.W. family. OBEAST and P.O.W. have performed throughout the tri-state area including shows at Dark Shadows (Newark,NJ), Club Speed (NY,NY) and The Rhumba (Bronx, NY). OBEAST recently appeared on the Sam Stone Show taped @ The Royal Peacock in Atlanta, GA performing Danger and Jersey Act before verbally dismantling all takers in a freestyle battle. In addition to performing with P.O.W., OBEAST has shared the stage/studio with Flo Brown, Heathen, Jewelz and Nachi.
