Instrumental Rock

An original, instrumental progressive rock, porno funk trio, UNICRON has been rocking people minds and asses for the last year in the small college town of Kent, OH. Starting as a drunken improv jam band turned drunken cover band, UNICRON now has a vast repetoire of original instrumental compositions. Combining driving, chaotic rhythms, fierce guitar leads and subdued, spaced out jams, UNICRON performs with a level of intensity and non-pretensiousness (is it pretensious to call yourself unpretensious?) not often found in experimental music. As of recent, original bassist Biff Stifftickle has relocated to Tempe, AZ for recording school. Bassist Dr. Xavier Beefcurtains of Rockamopopolous and 1959 fame has taken over this role.
Band/artist history
Bassist Biff Stifftickle and drummer Rev. Dick Penetrator were riding the final wave of the late Double Barrel when the young Neal "The Setranaut" Cockstrong appeared. After playing loud drunken improv jams and covers in bars, UNICRON realized that they needed to expand their repetoire. Since then, UNICRON has written dozens of original songs, ranging from heavy punk-influenced rockers, to slow, spaced-out jams, low key funk, undancably intricate prog rock & math rock numbers, and blissfully moronic crowd pleasers. In Feb of 06, Biff left for recording school in AZ. We found an immediate replacement in wunderkind Dr. Xavier Beefcurtains.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
We play out all the time. More than any band needs to. Aside from playing at clubs in Kent on a regular basis, we also have spread around the state playing in Akron, Cleveland and Columbus. We hope to spread out a little more this summer and hit up Toledo, Athens, Pittsburg, Detroit and other midwest hot spots.
Your musical influences
Our personal influences vary greatly between members. Dick listens to a lot of Zappa, jazz, Charlie Parker, Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, early & fusion-era Miles, progressive rock acts like Rush, King Crimson, and Yes, funk, particularly P-Funk and Fred Wesley, as well as a plethora of bad 80's new wave and hair metal. Neal is fond of groups w/ face-melting guitarists, such as Hendrix, the Mars Volta, Bear vs Shark, as well as jazz and other stuff. The UNICRON sound falls somewhere around Hella meets P-funk's rhythm section w/ balls out guitar over Primus sounding grooves.
What equipment do you use?
Shitty Drums w/ nice cymbals & go-go bells, Fender Custom Telecaster, Fender Twin Reverb w/ dual 100 watt Electro Voice speaker magnets, lots of effects, 5-String bass w/ bass synth pedal.
Anything else?
Thank you Jimmy Tingle for the photos.
