TRUE RUMOR - The OFFICIAL KINGS of POWER POP. The title "Kings of Power Pop" was bestowed on True Rumor by the "King of Pop" Michael Jackson, who found through litigious proceedings he couldnt have more than one title himself. On a side note, Michael's ranch was wonderful, but the beds werent very roomy!
Band/artist history
True Rumor was originally formed in 1984. Singer, Songwriter, Guitarist Steve Meko and Drummer Bobby Lee Moller had both been members of the New York City based Hardcore band "Victims of Society", which had disbanded earlier that year. Steve and Bobby wanted to form a band with a more melodic, straight ahead rock sound. Their first recruit was Bassist Timmy Boyland, who was formerly a member of "The Dispositions" - a band that had shared the same indie-label as V.O.S.. Keyboardist Paul Stanich was soon added, to make the original line-up of True Rumor complete. This line-up released True Rumors Debut LP "Silent Generation" in February 1988 on Catch Em Records. The LP contained the Songs "Midnight Ride", "Without You", "Excessive Ways", "Walkin' From Your Heart", and "Revolving Doors" - Which were recorded at Noise New York Studios in NYC between April and May 1987. The title track "Silent Generation", "Iowa", and "Something More" were recorded during the Summer of 1986, with Huw Gower (Guitarist with The Records, Graham Parker, and David Johansen) lending production assistance. Keyboardist Paul Stanich left after "Silent Generation" was released, moving to Nashville to persue his interests in music production. True Rumor added Lead Guitarist Kenny Newton, a veteran of the New Jersey Rock Nightclub Circuit, after Stanich's departure. The band soon began work on their second release, a CD titled "Knee Deep in Circumstance". "Knee Deep.." was released in 1989 on the MiniTrue Music label. The CD included 10 new True Rumor compositions, as well as 3 songs from their debut LP. The CD contained the songs "Right By Her", "Winning Track", "Lonely Shadow", "Look Back and Know", "Trust", "I'm Sure It's Real", "Open Your Eyes", "Get To Know You", "I'm There", "Random Fire", "Iowa", "Silent Generation", and "Midnight Ride". The CD was recorded at Mix-O-Lydian studios with engineer Don Sternecker, and was self-produced.
