Easy 13 - Biography At first glance it would be noted that Cape Breton is a hot bed for Traditional and more recently Indie Rock music. However, Easy 13 has departed somewhat from both genres and has come up with their own unique Pop Rock sound. With influences that range from 80's pop, U2, Matchbox 20 and Three Doors Down, Easy 13 can take their listener on a melodic journey, or toe tapping frenzy. With a firm grip on the direction of their music, Alton MacKinnon and Chad Bennet have spent the better part of the last four years creating music that is tailored for radio. With the release of their latest CD Overflow, Easy13 has in fact made waves in radio securing air play throughout Eastern Canada . Overflow was recorded and produced by Alton and Chad at Key Demo Studio and was mixed and mastered at Soundpark Studios by award winning engineer Jamie Foulds. "I was very impressed by the Easy 13 project from the moment it landed at my studio . Strong writing with great pop instincts. This album is definitely going to attract some attention!" (Jamie Foulds , Soundpark Studios) The first single from Overflow, Threw Me Away reached #1 on the East Coast Countdown and was #85 of the top 100 on K94 FM Radio. Their second single, How to Kiss reached #2 on the East Coast Countdown, #1 on K94 FM Radios top 9@ 9 and #7 on the hot 30 countdown. Their latest release, Without a Trace which features Jamie Foulds on keyboards debuted as a pick hit on K94 FM Radios hot 30 and currently sits at #7 on the East Coast Countdown. "Easy 13 have hit the scene running. Great writing, sweet harmonies and tight musicianship give the band what they need to be players in our great music scene. They already have a hit on the countdown and I look forward to many more!" (Jack Bonaparte, East Coast Countdown) Easy 13 has also been recognized for their songwriting abilities Alton and Chad continue to impress me with their song writing and arrangements. They grow with every song they write. This record is a strong first effort from Easy 13. (Bruce Guthro) In fact both: How To Kiss and Threw Me Away advanced to the second round of judging in the rock Category at the 2005 International Songwriting Competition in Nashville TN . The songs were chosen from over 15,000 entries from around the world! Easy13 continue to work their live show which proves to be intimate, interactive and most of all fun . The guys take it to the people their way, with and acoustic based show that combines their need to have a laugh along with their appreciation of music. Their live show and studio work has recently been featured on Eeastlink Television. Another Cape Breton band that is sure to rise up in this business. " (Barry MacKinnon, XFM Antigonish)
Band/artist history
Easy 13 members Alton MacKinnon of Sydney Mines, and Chad Bennett of North Sydney, have been busy writing and producing new material for theie next project. Their Debut EP "Easy 13 OVERFLOW", also recorded and produced at Key Demo Studios,North Sydney and their single Mr. Wonderful was featured on K94 FM Radio as pick hit on the Hot 30 Countdown. The duo, also had a radio interview with C103 in Moncton which was aired on Oct13, 2002. Alton MacKinnon, was born and raised in Sydney Mines where he currently resides and works in the Human Services Profession. It was while Alton was staying with an uncle in St. Catharines Ontario that he first picked up a guitar. Frightened by the horrible sounds that he heard his uncle gave him an incentive to learn to play the instrument. The deal was Alton would learn one song on the guitar and he could keep it. It worked. Altons musical passion was quickly fueled while collaborating on projects with longtime friend and musician Cory Keeping, who has toured with Bruce Guthro. In the summer of 1997 Alton worked with Cory and a professional piper from Scotland, Mark Stewart. Upon entering an open mike competition at the St. Anns Gaelic College, they had a first place finish, where Alton was recognized for his songwriting abilities with his single Where Im Going. Where Im Going would also bring success for Alton in the spring of 1998. Alton entered the Moosehead Talent Search and took top honor as overall winner. The prize package included a professional photo shoot and studio time at the award- winning Lakewind Sound Studio. There Alton worked with Gordie Sampson and Fred Lavery in completing a professional demo. Soon after, Alton performed on ASNs Breakfast Television . In the fall of 1999 Alton was selected as a semi-finalist in the 1999 Startrack Competition sponsored by MBS Radio. Alton has since received air time on Wake up to Cape Breton with his song Where Im Going, and has also been perfecting his craft as a writer and performer in a determination to be successful in his musical pursuits. Chad Bennett was born and raised in North Sydney where he currently resides and works in the teaching profession. Inspired by his father, an avid guitar player, he began strumming at the age of 12. After a short while he quickly discovered a desire for more rhythmic instruments and his passion for percussion began. Chad quickly became recognized as a local talent and along with Chris Iannetti and Cory Keeping, both of whom have worked with Bruce Guthro, formed a sensational band named Blind Illusion. As a member of the band he had the opportunity to tour across the Maritimes, opening for such acts as Harem Scarem, Kim Mitchell, Trooper, Haywire, Lee Arron, and Lou Diamond Phillips. Chads career was highlighted in 1993 when the group Blind Illusion was successful in winning the 1993 CJCB Music Spirit East Contest. The outcome of this win would prove to be beneficial as one of Blind Illusions single was recorded and distributed by Sony Music Canada nationally. As Easy 13" Alton and Chad have taken their unique styles and abilities and combined them in an effort to create a musical style to be enjoyed by all.
