The Mexicolas
Biography
By Suzanne Azzopardi
Most 24 year olds are at work right now trying to figure out where their youth and their dreams went. Not Jamie Evans. He has already spent 7 years of his life touring the world as a support act to the likes of Alice Cooper, Def Leppard and Wheatus, and now hes recently just formed his own new band The Mexicolas, and wants the world to hear some of his own music.
.
Jamie moved to Germany at the age of 2 (his father was posted there by the forces). In a strange country, with no friends his age, he bonded with his fathers guitar instead. By the age of 6 he was a fledging guitarist.
It was a really miserable time for me. I overcame the sheer boredom of being in a foreign land by learning to play the guitar. I just picked it up and wrote songs all the time....
He moved back to the UK 10 years later and joined a performing arts school. The offers started flooding in. He fronted several bands (Lukan and FIN) and started working with the likes of Nigel Kennedy, Ruby Turner and Brian May. Nigels management also represented Def Leppard, so when they were looking for a support act for the UK tour, Jamie got the gig. He gave up his university place, and started touring the UK, and then the globe.
This led to tours with Alice Cooper, Thunder and Rachel Stamp, but eventually life on the road took its toll and Jamie decided to stay in one place and make music again. Jamie found a drummer called TT who was living in South Africa and signed to a label with a band called Amersham. Shortly after, found bass player Ben, formerly of a very well know local Midland outfit, and they just clickedThe Mexicolas were born.
The band count The Police, David Bowie, Jeff Buckley, Wes Montgomery and The Stranglers as their influences, although The Mexicolas write truly original music that have deep and powerful melodies, with a wise, soulful voice that belies the bands years. The Mexicolas repertoire stretches from heart-wrenching ballads to fiery rock numbers, and Jamie cant wait to share them
Really, I would love the songs to be heard on a massive scale, whilst staying true to myself. I only ever want to write honest believable songs.
Band/artist history
If you took two frustrated musicians and put them thirty feet above the streets of Digbeth Birmingham, added a dash of late night drinking, a two week bout of Pneumonia, a dozen microwaveable meals and a strong sense of togetherness, then cooked at gas mark 6 for two months solid ! You would find that The Mexicolas are a rather special dish indeed.
Jamie Evans (Vocals, Guitars, Bass and Keyboards) and Tim Trotter (Drums, Percussion, Backing Vocals) have been hiding away since they formed in the spring of 2004. The result is an honest, gutsy collection of believable songs, fuelled by many personal experiences that both Jamie & Tim have endured together over the two or so years that they have been friends, Expect to be moved, excited, impassioned and above all pleasantly surprised by their debut offering. The Mexicolas would like to implicitly thank their past for their new lease of musical life and look forward to sharing this experience with the new..... The Mexicolas !!
All of my songs are written from gut of my stomach and reflect basically the past 3 years or so of my life, many ups and downs, but always honest and believable lyrics !! When I finish a song it feels like Ive just been in therapy for a week! But I feel a massive weight off my shoulders. The songs, which I hold the closest to my heart, are; Easy Smile Which basically reveal to a few people from the past that all smiles were forced more often than not. Times Infinity Another way of saying how heavy love can hang on your heart, consider yourself on the brink of irrationality and youre getting close. Spies This songs lyrics were so hard to get out in one go, Im trying to say how it feels to be in the same room as someone, but be somewhere else altogether in my head. A lot of self-questioning in this one. Belong This song is an I hold my hands up song, finally accepting that somethings are better left alone, you cant force happiness. Although these descriptions may seem a little depressing, I like to think, the lyrics make the listener pause for reflection, and maybe relate to what they say! Ive tried to avoid clichés as much as possible, which is a task in itself. The music however is equally important, providing the essence of the song, Ive just been honest with myself whilst writing this record, honesty gets you far in life, and its about time someone poured their heart out. Theres no room for contradiction in The Mexicolas dears!!!
TIM TROTTER Started out on classical guitar at the age of 10, but soon became engrossed by the drums after listening to Iron Maidens Piece of Mind album and spent many a night trying to play along on mums pots, pans and cushions on my bed, Always fantasised about being a rock star drummer and finally went pro at the age of 18 after moving out to South Africa in 1992. Joined Amersham and signed a deal with BMG and recorded, released and toured 5 albums, returned to my native UK in 99 and had to pretty much start from scratch. Did a shitty job, including my favourite a packer in a banana factory True !! Met Jamie by chance after supporting the band he was in, In London and joined the band for 2 years. It was then we realised that we needed to do our own thing and proceeded to set up camp in Birmingham, The Mexicolas were born and Jamies feet smell of faeces. My eyes are blue and my nipples are a pinky brown colour. The only thing I love more than music is my 9-week-old daughter Amy.
BEN DRUMMOND My name is Ben Drummond and I come from a long line of Bass players, My creative vibes were forged by my fathers Fender, my journey began playing when I was 12 years old and have never looked back, my biggest passion is music, and the music we (Los Mexicolas) are playing, I met my soul brothers ken while out at the Tao ken jujutsu saloon bar, where we were participating in a little late night bird appreciation, after talking about breasts well throughout the night, it dawned on me that we were going to be comrades, amigos, Mexicolas in arms. My favourite food is wallpaper and ginger rat food from subway, followed by boiled eggs with tarmac soldiers.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I have been performing most of my life and must put CBGS'S down as maybe the biggest anti climax to to any venue I have played in and what I expected the place to look like over in New York!
Real Dustbin and tiny, although was a real buzz to play there.
Your musical influences
The Police, David Bowie, Jeff Buckley, Wes Montgomery and The Stranglers amongst many many others, mainly all the great writers and artists who sing with a passion and sing with the art of sounding like they believe what they are singing.

Hello everyone who might read this message..... I have been so busy with writing and recording I kinda forgot that we set this site up ! I will be popping onto this site from time to time as of now and hope to interact with fellow and likeminded musicians.
Look forward very much to share some of the passion which we all love here in music. Respect - Jamie Evans
