Sandcastles Sandcastles
One of my favourite songs of mine. It's unusual that I like a song of my own so much, but I really do love this and I love to play it live.
I'm a 19 year old singer/songwriter/guitarist, originally from London, currently studying English Literature at the University of Portsmouth, UK. People have described my music as a mixture of Michelle Branch and Kathryn Williams. My lyrics come mostly from personal experience and I just hope that people can relate to them. Currently I am working on a number of new songs which I hope to record at some point for an EP.
Band/artist history
I'm a self taught guitarist and pianist. I've been playing piano for about 5 years now, and guitar for 2. Singing is something that has always been a large part of my life. I joined my local church choir when I was nearly 7 and was made Head Chorister in 1999. I recently gave up this position due to my starting university in October 2004. I've always played an instrument throughout my life, starting (like most kids) with recorder. Then at primary school I took up violin for a number of years and joined the obligatory "girl band" which was where I got my first taster of song writing. Thanks to this, I continued writing songs. They weren't particularly good, but everyone has to start somewhere.
In 2002, I began to teach myself guitar and took my songwriting much more seriously. As time went on I began to actually like the music I was writing. Eventually I got to the standard where I could perform my songs to people, starting with small groups of close friends. I have many close friends in bands and seeing them at gigs inspired me to keep working at my music, and I began to perform to larger audiences, starting with a slot at my high school's Mother & Daughter Dinner. I played my first proper gig in April 2004, I had a good 45 minute slot and loads of my close friends were there. It was nice to be able to look out and see them, knowing they truly supported me. Since then I've played at a few other places, including a local acoustic night here in Portsmouth. I was also asked to provide the backing vocals on a track for my friend's band's debut album.
People ask me if I get paid much for doing gigs and I usually tell them that I don't play these gigs for the thought of getting paid (although that is a nice added bonus). This is something I enjoy doing and I would do it whether I got paid for it or not. It would be lovely to have a record deal, and have CDs in Virgin, but at the end of the day, I do this because I love music and being to express myself in this way.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yeah I do. I play wherever I can. I have played in church halls, at school events and local cafes, mostly in the Surrey area. Now that I'm in Portsmouth for most of the year I have investigated places to play here too. There is absolutely nothing else like it. I adore it, although you'd probably never guess so what with the amount of nerves and worrying I tend to do before I play! Special moments? hmm, Looking out at my first gig and seeing all my friends there. Then forgetting the opening line of a song and having to play Smelly Cat instead. I just shrugged and laughed it off. Everyone found it highly amusing. Also the memory of playing a Michelle Branch song at my last choir concert at my old high school always makes me smile.
Your musical influences
I'm a huge fan of Michelle Branch, Jessica Harp, Ben Jelen, Vanessa Carlton, John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Joni Mitchell, Switchfoot, Taking Back Sunday, Kathryn Williams, Brand New and Hanson amongst many many others
What equipment do you use?
I play a beautiful Crafter GAE-8
