Modern Guitar Quintet

A modern band with a unique sound of 3 guitars bass and drums and sometimes flute We do all original compositions

The sound of the Modern Guitar Quintet is based off of modern composition theory and approaches, while at the same time being very aware of melody and rhythm. Another factor that sets the group apart is the give and take between reading the charts and improvisation. Aside from more traditional ad libs, the arrangements are kept alive and fresh by the constant, and sometime instantaneous, variations, all while remaining a focused, cohesive group. The balance of all these factors gives the group their unique sound.
Band/artist history
The Modern Guitar Quintet was formed by Carl Amundson and Dan Crowley in late 1997. The group started out to be an outlet to play the way we wanted to play, and to create a new sound. Most groups we heard were stagnant in the songs they played, the form that they used, to the style that they play the songs in. They also lacked a cohesive sound. The best way to avoid cliches was to use original tunes, and the best way to get a cohesive sound was to write charts.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
We play live as much as possible. This band is a live band. Playing out can be the best feeling. Here's a special moment caught on a tape of us playing live. We just finished the song Sable (which you can download here) and this guy jumps up and starts talking to the audience. Here's the link to the wav file. It's hysterical. One could say he was "under the influence". http://www.atlantic.net/amundson/sounds/kick.wav
Your musical influences
Our influences range from Bird to Bartok. From Ellington to George Rusell.
Anything else?
The Modern Guitar Quintet hopes to continue to push the sound barrier. The group continues to write new songs, trying to show what can be done with the guitar and with sound
