History
Formed in July 2002 almost by chance but actually by drinking with the right people and attending the right parties, the musicians that form OTN were graced with the luck of finding each other. OTN are incredibly talented musicians, throwing themselves into a mixing pot and coming up with a sound so unique that they have taken even the most jaded of people and shocked them with their sheer musical genius. With a range of music genres from hip hop, rock, new breed, funk and jazz, their songs are original, funky and aimed at such a large section of the market that other locals will be asking how OTN managed to get it so right?
Their tracks range from heavy rock to jazzier sounds with each of them incorporating all aspects of their influences thus creating individually original tracks. To see this team on stage you realise just how connected musically they are and it really blows the mind and steals the imagination.
OTNs line-up consists of Riaan as lead vocalist, Andrew on bass guitar, Gez on vinyls and emcee, Ian on guitars, Darren on drums and Jason as sound engineer, surprisingly that with this much talent in one room, they actually get on as well as they do...
Band Members:
Riaan (Lead Vocals): The Princess
Forced to sing in the school play to get the school sweetheart, Riaan surprised not only his friends and school colleagues but himself with his naturally amazing vocal talent. Realising that this was a passion in his life, he moved up to Johannesburg from Durban to chase his love (the singing and not the girl he left her in Cape Town) and managed to find himself hooked up with OTN.
Ian (Lead Guitar): Oaf
Ian is passionate about jazz, experimenting with this genre in college. He obviously hated it at the time and tried his hand with another band straight after college. Not being able to experiment with his own writing style nearly gave up the music game but thankfully decided to approach his guitar albeit wearily and in the privacy of his own head, started experimenting with different styles and original ideas. Ian has taken his passion and managed to incorporate his unique sound into the songs that he has composed, musically.
Andrew: (Bass Guitar): Pookie / Glasshole
Andrew has also added his innate bass playing skills to the team and was doomed to be tied to Ian in the band after not only being mates in school but also attending the same college. With the bass guitar being a love for Andrew that started to grow from about the age of 14 and then perfected at college, original ideas and an understanding of the music has made this partnership throughout the many years a solid one. And just for good measure Andrew has decided to incorporate the biggest bass amp / speaker rack in the world, ever!
Darren: (Drums & Percussion): Smeggy
Darren has been a bit of a slut in the industry, playing for the likes of Pestroy, Wasted Youth and if you can believe it, Purple Haemorrhoids (no, he only played for them and didnt have them). Mastering the drums and making it look so easy that you're almost tempted to try it out yourself. Darren has a great connection with the rest of the band and provides great entertainment when not hiding behind his absolute love and talent.
Gez: (Scratch DJ & Vocals): Mon-gay-zee
Gez the tyrant as he would like to be known as (but simply, Mon-gay-zee as he is called by his band colleagues) has rocked many dance floors with his vast knowledge in all types of music from house to hard rock and everything in between. Hanging out in clubs from late 80's onwards, Gez has taken the DJ industry by storm with his cheeky moves on the vinyl decks and his ability to scratch with the best of them. Always humble he would not admit it but his rapping style is simply unmistakable. The band would like to say that he is the token black guy but lets face it; the boys good.
Jason: (Sound Engineer): Jeneson-Ann
OTN have incorporated Jason into the band as their sound biatch which works to their advantage when keeping him working until all hours of the morning (whining not withstanding). Our very own glow-in-the-dark beacon (just add beer) which guides the band through times of darknessAlso fortunate to have attended the same college as Ian and Andrew, Jays experience ranges from the talented artist to the simple pain-in-the-ass but he treated all of them with the professionalism they deserved except that one time! Dedication to the task at hand over rides the Saturday morning hangovers and the bond that has formed is simply unbreakable.
