Jazz Fusion

Lloyd Warren and his band, The Warren Project, are a jazz/rock group based in the Atlanta market. His music is a blend of funk rhythms, rock tones, and jazz changes. The music features Lloyd on guitar, keys, bass, and percussion; Mike McGee on drums; Will Scruggs and Tom Regeski on sax, and Dustin Sargent on bass.
Band/artist history
Lloyd is a native of Memphis, TN, but for the last few years he has called Atlanta, GA home. He grew up on the progressive rock bands such as Yes, Asia, and Genesis, but after hearing guitar legend Shawn Lane in the local bars, his interest in music changed to jazz and fusion. After moving to Atlanta, he began touring with the fusion band, The Storm. Eventually, ready to go in his own direction, Lloyd formed a "progressive blues band" called Shades of Blue. The band became a regular on the blues scene playing a combination of traditional blues songs and some of Lloyd's originals. He then released the first "Warren Project" cd on his own label, a mixture of blues and rock with jazz-style chord changes. Finally admitting to himself what he really wanted to do, Lloyd re-formed The Warren Project with jazz musicians from the Atlanta area, concentrating on playing Lloyd's originals. "I started playing pretty late in life, as far as musicians go. I didn't really start playing guitar until college, just jamming with friends and playing blues. It wasn't until I heard Shawn Lane and Al Di Meola that I really wanted to learn the thing. They just completely changed the way I heard music. Then I started hunting down recordings from other great players like Allan Holdsworth, Mike Stern, Eric Johnson, and Scott Henderson. After that, I was ruined for life! The music I hear in my head is funk rhythms, convoluted chord changes, jazz lines and fills, with a rock tone. Don't get me wrong, I love ballads and smooth jazz also. I just want it to be music that moves you in some way emotionally. I want it to be accesable, but challenging...if that makes sense!" He lists his influences as: Mike Stern, Shawn Lane, John Scofield, Eric Johnson, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny, Allan Holdsworth, Scott Henderson, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Robben Ford. His influence to get off his butt and play is his wife, Nancy.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes, even though we started as just a studio project. Our best moment (for me anyway) was when we finally played these songs live at a party being thrown for us and it all just clicked.
