Spo-it's was born in Savannah Georgia 1990 on John Wayne Gacy's Birthday March 17 (which also happens to be St. Patrick's Day) by Scott Corkern and E Jason Gibbs. Both of whom were spoken word performers and trouble makers. Disgusted by the suit wearin' wine sippin' mutherfuckers who haunt the typical spoken word gig, the idea was to put together a project that could mascrade as a band and play in bars. The next month they sold out the crossroads ,their first bar gig , on a Tuesday night and were requested to never show their face in there again. Spo-it's have turned their writings of violence, psyhopathology, destruction and sex into direct action. With a revolving cast of musicians and writers the Spo-it's have played every venue from the Whiskey in LA to CBGB's and The Knitting Factory in NYC and all points in between. Their live shows have included live beatings, robots engaged in mechanical sex acts, Volunteers from the audience set on fire, and many exploded TV's . Audience participation is a big part of Spo-it's shows. we always ask for volunteers to get tied up and beaten by JEN (and there are always volunteers) . We have had folks bring instruments to the shows. We will have an extra chain and grinder or two for folks to help in the destruction. and if someone is really into it I might let them play the Grindertar. People are always bringing TV's to destroy. I use the Term Exploitation music as an attempt to put what Spo-it's in one word. The audience is both attracted and repulsed by themes. Now with our appearance on the Jerry Springer show we have become part of the prurient media exploitation frenzy that we had only observed before. The current core troop consists of : Scott Corkern: Vocals, Tenor Sax, and tape loops. " I was bored and started this thing, but don't blame me" Ash: Alto Sax , Guitar , Vocals " I'm just in it for the Midgets, and to improve my Kung Fu" JEN: Vocals Beatings Grinder "It was five years ago. I was on Holly's couch a drinking and on xanax and Ash came up and said 'you wanna be in my band' next think I knew I was in Atlanta playing. that's a pretty typical story as to how someone might end up in the Spo-it's." Blake Elzenhorst on Guitar " I started as the first Spo-it's Roady. I refused to carry anything and just sat and drank free band beer. Then when their guitar player quit I stepped in , mostly for the free beer." Icy Mike :Bass " on my first show I picked up this smashed TV to throw it and a capacitor exploded in my hand splitting my thumb open" Rik Jackson: Drums "I'm just in it for the sex young clicks old chicks whatever" Plus the Exploitation road show crew . which can number anywhere up to 10 depending on the venue and the tour. So come to the show bring a TV to throw, Handgun Handgun Handgun. "What do you get for 5$ ...anything you want."
Band/artist history
SPO-IT's TOUR DIARY By Scott Corkern Friday Dec. 2nd ... Norfolk Virginia, Nsect Club Much Excitement About opening for Fossil Punk Legends the UK Sub's. We Arrive After an all night drive 9 am @ "He Who shall not work" , Scott Bryant's , House. Scott provides medieval weapons and much interesting junk to smash and grind on. Klaus from Hell Hound records calls Scott from Germany about Spo-It's while we are hanging out. Scott -"Spo-it's are like the Manson Family .... only in a good way." Klaus - ".... Manson Family ...This is bad ?.. no?" Scott- "Hey , you're sitting on top of Hitler's bunker there aren't you ?.." Klaus - " ..you have a point." Then Scott Puts me on the phone and I explain that the Spo-It's are like a stew and as long as you know which vegetable you are then you are doing OK. Much is lost in the translation. The sound man @ Nsect has seen our video and knows what to expect, A good sign. We get 4 Pizza's , much leeway for our stage show destruction and our Chicken Fucking Videos shown on all the club's many monitors during performance. 200+ crowd and a good audience participation on the destruction portion of the show. Sat Dec. 3rd ... Richmond Virginia, The Hole in the Wall. Flushed with Victory @ our UK Sub's gig we blow into Richmond to play this little Yuppie coffee shop/jazz club gig we picked up after being bumped by the Candy Snatchers from the factory show next door. We squeeze 10 performers and 50 paid audience into this large living room of a club. Song #4 we turn on the grinders ,Hot metal sparks hit the back wall of the club from stage. 1/3 of the audience flees in terror. Some of the remaining bath in the scalding metal. Club owner freaks and cut's power. We collect our money and go next door to drink the UK Sub's free beer. Sun Dec. 4th .. New York NY, The Continental "We have been waiting for this all week" says Ingrid, Bar maid , and Booker of strange music on Sundays @ Continental. Our opening acts are a mixture of Kurt Kobane wantabe's and Sonic youth rip-off's the standout being W.O.O. a noise jazz quartet. We hit the stage @ midnight. The place is packed it being Sunday and no cover charge. @ song three "Dead Girls" The audience picks up the hammers and crowbar's provided and smashes all of our props into pieces no larger than your hand then they roll around in the metal and broken glass. Many good beating victims volunteer. A good time was had by all. Best comment "you guys Suck ..But you suck in a really interesting way." Mon. Dec. 5th .. Columbus Ohio, Stashes An all night drive finds us at 8-Ball Tattoo Studios. We find the Atomizer and lots of Ohio Junk to smash. Our two opening bands ,Joyride & Gravel , were both formed by Spo-it's Diaspora. Now both bands hate each other . Should make for a good show. Gravel has a interesting gimmick, a wheel of fun. This device is spun during the show to produce such results as a "Random senseless beating", or "free Beer for audience". My turntable breaks during the show. I get in a guitar fight with KC ,the lead guitar player of Joyride. His vintage fender Jaguar Vs my 20$ cash the Grindertar was never a fair match for him. The grinder attachment takes several chunks out of the guitar and him. All the time drowning out his puny sound with 600 watts of earsplitting effected feedback. Tues. Dec. 6th .. Wichita Kansas, Kirby's Beer Store. This is the coolest venue so far. The whole bar is 30' by 30' with a 10'x10' Stage. A lot of big groups have played Kirby's including Ethyl Meatplow and the Cows & Gray Matter. Our opening band is the Dead Sulivans, a solid "Mule" like trio. All nine Spo-it's pack into the back corner stage , filled with free beer and shots since 6pm. The crowd is a tight 65 or so people. We do a couple of jazz numbers then bring out the grinders for "Dead girls". There is no cover for the audience from sparks and destruction. No one would move out of the way of the show so we grinded and broke right in between the people. Then I break out 20$ cash the tight space seems to amplify the 600 watt feedback effect into insane dimensions. The whole crowd stays for the whole 2 hour show. We sell all but our last record . The grinder breaks during the show. They keep our destruction barrel as a pet. Wen Dec. 7th .. Day off Never go through the Rockies in December. We almost die several times our big trailer seems to keep us going in a line. Our drummer Jim is dry heaving from Alcohol poisoning in the back. "stop damn it I'm going to kill you all Blagghhh" for hours. There is no stopping in the snow. We try to make it through the Rockies before dark but we are snowed in a little past Vale @ Eagle Colorado. Jim is sitting in a pool of frozen Vomit. We feast on buffalo burgers and the Spo-it's chicks take to the hotel's hot tub. Thurs. Dec. 8th .. Salt Lake City, The Cinema Bar. We search in vain the Pawn shops of Grand Junction for a replacement turntable but I find Moog synthesizer records. We arrive in Salt Lake @ 8pm too late for sound check. The management says we got written up in three local papers, The tribune, ink spots, and slug mag. Our opening band is the Style Monkeys, white boy funk , UGH. The beer is like fizzy water. Salt lake is like a whole city of morons. The crowd is all Spo-it's but not much of one. The grinder/DJ booth and / 20$ cash all refuse to work. We destroy the broken turntable. The folks that were there seemed to be very puzzled by the whole spectacle. Friday Dec. 9th .. Seattle Washington, The Weathered Wall. Our Gig @ the OK hotel has been canceled but our promoter has switched our gig to the Weathered Wall. Headlining the new gig is a three piece Bass Clarinet/ electronic drum kit/ and guitar singer, very atmospheric. The other band was a 5 piece Jazzy rock band with a tenor sax/ 2 guitars/bass and drums. We sound check a jazz version of Hamburger to lull the venue into complacency. We don't set up our DJ booth or our video show. The crowd is a strange collection of Leather Jacketed alternative folks shelling out 6$ a head for some unusual music. The Venue is packed out. There were 60-80 people when we went off @ 9:30. By the time we get off the stage we had to push through people to get out. We Rock out the full Spo-it's show. The only mishap is that one of jenny's fireworks hops into the fireworks bag and the whole thing goes up. It's a good effect but no more fireworks for the rest of the tour. 20$ Cash's grinder breaks. Saturday Dec. 10th .. Portland Oregon , the North Western. This place is a small brew pub that gave us a last minute gig after the Madrona hill Winery had to stop doing shows. We hit the Portland thrift stores for a new turntable. I buy a 5$ and a 12$ 60's models. We also find a used grinder to replace the broken one on 20$ Cash. We start out on a low impact jazz set. But, a lot of caries's crazy friends come out and demand to be beaten. Jenny obliges them. One of the female owners was freaked out by the bloodshed. The other owner liked it. Free 7% home-brew for all the drinking Spo-it's. Sunday Dec. 11th .. San Francisco California , Spike's Cafe. We drive up on this place and it looks burned out and closed forever. The other band gets there and we both wait in the rain for the owners to get in. But , in the basement under the burned out cafe husk there was this funky litle Jazz Club. The opening band is Creamy, a side project of several S.F. area bands. The most famous member is the bass player with the Mommy Heads. We do a 2 hour jazz set and I play so much sax that I can no longer blow anything but air. The two women that run the place ply all of the Spo-it's chicks with free liquor drinks. Monday Dec. 12th .. Los Angeles California, The Whiskey a Go Go. We were picked by Hit's mag as the buzz band of the week. Because of a flat tire on the trailer we hit Sunset blvd. about 9pm and we miss sound check, again. We load in between bands. Ugh, grunge music, the first foreboding sign. Then ,no videotaping, no fire , no grinders, I expected next no spitting and foul language. The band before us is a barbie rock quartet, real radio rock. As they slink off the Exploitation Road show jumps up for their LA premier. The bouncers had neglected to tell us not to smash all those TV sets we had brought on stage. Also, I set up 20$ Cash on the 600 Watt PA setting it on 10. On song three "dead girls" the destruction starts. Jenny takes the chain to all the TV's .One of the TV's Explodes on her and she is bleeding freely all over everything. I cut on the 600 watt surprise of blazing feedback which blocks out all else until it is cut off. After the 8 minute version of dead girls is over the mics go dead and we hear "thank you Spo-It's". The Spo-it's have done the Whiskey. Tuesday Dec. 13th .. Scottsdale Arizona , The Atomic Cafe About eight Strangers follow us from LA to Arizona to see the full show. I was surprised to see them in the crowd. The bar had hyped the show to hell, with full poster size blowups of our Spo-it's fliers and ads. The show has been sponsored by a local tattoo and piercing salon. We have dropped Tim and Carrie off in LA so only one Bass and no Violin. Our opening band is a Primus/ Rollins band type of hard outfit called Wendigo Psychosis. The big crowd pumped us up to do a big noisy violent show. we duct taped Melinie's nipples so that she could have her shirt torn off for a beating without closing the bar. Also the singer for the first band lines up for abuse. I don't think by his expression that he was expecting a chain whip. After we get off Kat from the Tattoo parlor demands more show and weirder. But, it is 2 am and we must stop. The crowd is 200-300. Wednesday Dec. 14th .. El Paso Texas , The Attic A group of local punks find us in a Chinese restaurant. They said that they had our tape and they wer
