The Randoms came together as today’s line up in summer 2003.
A fitting name for a band with such contrasting members.
Founder member Tim Mathews (Guitar/synth) had previously tasted some success with 90’s Manchester influenced band ‘Strange Weather’ with whom he played keyboard. The band split in 1998 and Tim was determined to use this experience and freedom to create and write in his own style, which he hadn’t previously had. Tim spent the next 28 months working as a tour manager for various chart acts including Sweet Female Attitude. This time spent in hotel rooms helped Tim stockpile song ideas and re built his confidence and ability in song writing.
Lead singer “fast” Greg Derbyshire who had met Tim at junior school got reunited through a mutual friend. Greg, at the time an industrial engineer, had previous experience singing backing vocals and studio work with a couple of Indy bands and at 6’5” was keen to use his commanding presence and vocal talent at the front of the stage rather than the studio. So late 2002 Tim and Greg were the beginnings of what would become The Randoms and formed a perfect writing team together with Tim writing scores of catchy melodies and the pair penciling in clever lyrics. The early stuff was mostly acoustic and under the name ‘Nuevo riche’ they did a handful of small gigs. A few months went by and the two began to notice that soft acoustic sound didn’t fit the new quirky lyrics, which were fueled mostly by long drinking sessions out on the town. Lyrics soon began to echo the ironical suburban life and nights out which can be heard in songs like ‘Bar Music’, 'No Laughing Matter' and ‘Number 1’. Tim and Greg had been listening to a lot more punk based acts such as ‘The Clash’, ‘The Ramones’, and of course ‘ The sex pistols’. Both had always had a passion for classic rock bands, and ‘Guns & Roses’ and ‘AC/DC’ were always going to be a firm foundation as well as more recent acts such as ‘Oasis’. So a rockier edge was sought, and found with Tim’s brother Alex Lomas. Alex or ‘comedy Al’ is a constant energy on stage and off. His lead guitar provides an irreplaceable lick to each song and filled the gap, which the Acoustic had created.
So that left the bass guitar and drums. Tim had played with bassist Rob ‘Boob’ Reece and his ability was well known. Rob joined and from the start it was clear he was no less than 100% committed and his ability to play melody hugging bass lines was perfect for the songs.
It was summer of 2003 before drummer Sam Shields (21) joined The Randoms. The band had tried various drummers, none of which had the “ the pubs open and we don’t care!!” kind of attitude which the band echoed and not least, none of them had Sam’s ability.
Big influences from Led Zep are clear to hear in Sam’s style.
The Randoms have been playing quality gigs up and down the country since late summer 2003, and have made a big noise wherever they have played. With a style, which would be none the miss in either N.M.E or Q magazine, they have the ability and talent to lift any crowd. The songs are the driving force, and they are in abundance. Front man Greg Derbyshire commands attention, and with lyrics such as “ I’ll tie her up and take her hard ‘gainst the wall, it proves to her I don’t care “ you can guarantee that when all other bands have finished their sets it will be a Randoms song that you will be humming in the taxi ride home!Have you performed in front of an audience? We have played loads, my best is The Cavern in Liverpool, tho other good ones include, The Masque and Magnet in Liverpool and The Late Room and Dry Bar in Manchester.

Interesting: The 3rd band I know calling themselves "The Randoms"...
There was one in Berlin, Germany, founded 1967/1968, and there was one in the U.S., now also at the U.S. East Coast one called "The Random Band".
Is everybody running out of names?
