Monsterpuss began playing live in Summer 2001 at the Velvet Lounge with fellow up and coming bands such as Kitty in the Tree, Cactus Patch, DBC, Rockmaster General and Muckaferguson. In just a year they have acquired a home-grown fan base and recently opened for Mary Prankster at DC's premier venue, the 9:30 Club. Their heavy gig schedule has taken them to The Continental in New York, The Charleston in Brooklyn and Grape Street Pub in Philadelphia. Fans & music critics have pointed out similarities to the Pixies, Pretenders, PJ Harvey, Hole, and Sonic Youth.
Band/artist history
DC's "hot chicks" AKA Monsterpuss released First Class Lady via DC Riot Records in April 2002. It has been critically well received by the local and online press. "It's raw but appealing in true indie rock fashion," declares the Washington Post Extra. "Impressively produced (Northern Virginia Journal);" "the singer's voice has a rough edge appeal (www.undergroundbeatonline.com)." First Class Lady includes "Ohio" and "Breathe" as well as six additional straight-up rock tunes. Ingrid Stack (vocals, guitar), Ashley Baker (bass), and Kiki Schneider (drums, vocals) are diligently working on new songs. The next album will include "Johnny" and "Alive;" two songs that Schneider and Stack collaborated on. The band is scheduled to record in December of 2002. Ingrid (Washington, D.C., Pisces) began playing guitar at 16 and had her first DC gig at the Grog & Tankard in Georgetown. It wasn't until her second band, Peyote Circus (1994-1999), did she play the historic 9:30 club and Black Cat, as well as Coney Island High in NYC. After releasing the Peyote Circus album in May of 1999, Ingrid departed, but not before playing one last gig in July at the Velvet Lounge. Instead of continuing to play out, Ingrid returned to Walton Recording Inc. (Springfield, Va.) in August 1999 with engineer and producer Shannon Walton (Fleetwood Mac, the Pietasters) to create what is now First Class Lady. "I call it my rock album, an ode to straight up rock 'n' roll. What we do with Monsterpuss is pretty cool, a little harder, a little more punky, but the album is an homage, a total 50's Beatlesque rip-off." Her influences include Nirvana, Slant 6, Beth Orton, the Pixies, and Patti Smith. Kiki (Washington D.C., Capricorn) is no stranger to music. Her grandfather was a professional musician and she was always playing some sort of instrument, including clarinet, since she was 9. Kiki spent much of her pre-music career at Va. Tech posing as a Cracker Barrel waitress. Luckily, she came to her senses and her BA brought her back to DC. Her influences for her songwriting are Mary Prankster, Frank Zappa, and Willie Nelson. Her drum influences include Social Distortion and Green Day. When asked about Monsterpuss she is quick to point out that "MP makes me happy and I like how I feel I can really contribute to this band." As a drummer she likes "playing because it gets out a lot of frustrations and I get to sit in the back and not have people make me nervous." Although Kiki is known to step out in front on occasion, including being a guest vocalist for the DC band Flaco. Ashley (Norman, OK, Virgo) grew up playing viola in her school orchestra. Her love for the alternative not only includes gourmet food and fashion, but the Smashing Pumpkins, the Cure, the Pixies, Jane's Addiction, Foo Fighters, PJ Harvey, Luscious Jackson, Liz Phair and Hole. She is glad that "8 years in orchestra actually paid off for something. I've always loved the deep voice of the bass." Ashley plans to write her first tune for MP album number two. Her nomadic nature can't wait for the band to hit the road for their first official tour in Summer 2003.
