Rock n Roll

The Positions have churned out over 30 songs to describe the last 40 years of rock. Some say they have been successful, but in the process they have also charted a territory of their own. Whether borrowing a boutique guitar sound from The Kinks or sprinkling the vocals with a style reminiscent of The Talking Heads, the music all has one thing in common: its coming from a great band that likes to wow their fans but then leave them wanting more. The Positions put on a great show, you will know the regular attendees as they dance to some of the favourite tunes. Expect new songs here and there, and expect tunes to be trapped in your head for up to a week afterwards. That's normal. A listen to their wide repertoire echoes sentiments of: Sloan, The Talking Heads, The Kinks, The Shins and The Rolling Stones. Catch the Positions in Toronto (their stomping ground) and the surrounding area.
Band/artist history
The Ginger Minge was a great band. Then, they broke up, which pretty much put a stop to that. The Minge had played venues like the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern and had opened for international acts like The Vines. But all good things must come to an end, and this one sooner than most. Once that whole thing was over, the bassist and drummer decided that, just because that band was over, didn’t mean they couldn’t be in a band anymore. So they formed another band, and they called it The Positions. Why The Positions? Even they don’t know. Positions co-founder Brennan Gault was the bassist for The Ginger Minge. He’d been writing and recording songs in his room for years before the Minge dissolved, but never brought them forward and included them in the band’s repertoire. After the dissolution of the Ginger Minge, he played a few of his demos for the band’s drummer, Walter Scattolon. Walter liked what he heard, and decided to keep playing with his friend Brennan. At last check, they’re still friends and bandmates. The new band needed more members, so out went the ads. One of the early responders was a bright-eyed young chap by the name of Adam Mikitzel, a classically-trained violin player who took up the guitar as a teenager. His ideas and his songs fit in with what the fledgling band was trying to do, and thus began a solid collaboration. Since Brennan had taken over on the guitar, a new bass player was needed. After going through several bassists with few results, a student from Toronto answered yet another ad. His name was Tim Munro, and after a brief audition, he became the fourth member, adding sex appeal and a deep groove to the music. (Can you tell I wrote this?) With the quartet now complete, they set out to make their fortune. They’re still working on it. The different places that the band’s members come from give the band’s music a versatility and diversity that few other bands can boast of. While the music always comes back to its rock and roll heart, the songs range from the slow and delicate (What Time Takes Away) to the punkish and driven (Step Up). The band, in just two years, has more than 30 original songs in its repertoire, thanks mostly to Brennan’s amazing ability to write song after song after song. (In early 2004, Brennan wrote and recorded twelve songs in one weekend). Though we have a sound and a direction all our own, our influences do play a major role in our current sound. Bands and artists that we all agree on as having an impact on our music are Talking Heads, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Blue Rodeo Spoon, The Shins and early Radiohead. Though we sound like none of the above, we also sound like all of the above. This confuses us, too.
