To even begin to grasp the scope in which The Affiliate began, we must go back five years ago, where I became immersed in the underground hip hop culture. I was 17 at the time and had already left my home, became a very vocal aetheist, quit high school, came back to try and finish, been a rave DJ, and spent many years rollerblading. (Yeah, I know the rollerblading thing is pathetic, but it's relative, follow me here.) Being heavily involved in both the rave scene, and the rolling scene, I was exposed to graffiti and breakdancing, mostly from the skate videos done by Brian Bell, who now is responsible for doing the videos for Tribal Streetwear (or at least was the last I heard.) Soon, I was involved in two of the official four elements of hip hop. My own love for the hip hop culture increased, and not long afterwards, I picked up both turntablism and rapping.
By the age of 19, I was VP of a local hip hop network called Pass The Mic, working days at a brokerage firm, and still finding time to roll. Also, during those two years, I had accepted and acknowledged Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and my own personal Savior, affirming His life, His death, and His resurrection. Although a Christian in mind, I had yet to fully understand what it meant to be one in heart. During this year, I moved to San Diego to do advertising work for Daily Bread, an aggressive rollerblading magazine. It was during this time, that God finally put conviction deep into my heart, to live as He wanted me to live.
My time is San Diego was one of the most trying times in my life, I kicked out my live-in girlfriend, quit all alcohol and drug consumption, and completely gave up on hip hop, seeing that as a past life that I did not wish to be affiliated with ever again. After all of this, I still did not feel like I was where God wanted me, so I moved back to my mother's home in Cincinnati, to be with her and the rest of my family. God had finally called me home, both spiritually and literally.
After getting settled back into Cincinnati, I became involved in a youth ministry in Middletown, OH called Oasis. Never before had I seen God's Hand move so strongly. He began pushing me further and further into His work, and before I knew it, I was putting together an event for Oasis called Skatefest. God used that event so amazingly that I was asked to put something different together for next year, something that somehow had hip hop involved. That event ended up being 2004's Grassroots Festival.
I didn't want to do a hip hop festival, but said yes anyway, thinking it would either blow over, or become forgotten with everything else going on. I started work on another vision, a youth magazine for Oasis. In the very beginning, the magazine seemed to be coming together quite well, but before I knew it, our funding was cancelled, our staff had too much going on, and I was unable to be the leader that would be required for this effort. So, broken and not understanding why things weren't happening, I fell desperately to my knees and pleaded for God's direction. After much prayer and fasting, a single, focused thought entered my mind: "You have prior obligations. Focus on the hip hop event, and then we will see."
I was taken aback. I didn't want to re-live my time in the hip hop culture. To me, hip hop was nothing more than an avenue for destruction. So, timidly, and reluctantly, I began work on Grassroots. I knew that I would need someone that knew the Christian hip hop scene far better than I, someone that was currently involved in it to help me. I went to Oasis's resident DJ, Imago Dei. Beyond spinning every Tuesday night at Oasis, Imago Dei had done performance after performance of his solo material throughout the time I had been working in Oasis. I knew he could rap well, and dj a decent set.
As we began to work on the festival, he soon found out that I had a history within hip hop. Before I knew it, he had me djing along side of him on Tuesday nights. Finally, I told him that I used to rap as well. He asked me to guest on a song he was working on for Oasis. Something about showing the kids how hip hop heads give praise. That song was Hand's UP.
-BirdmanHave you performed in front of an audience?Yes. All over. One of the most enjoyable things ever. This year's Grassroots festival.
