I choose the University of North Texas for two main reasons - location, and music curriculum. I love where the campus is set, right between Oklahoma City and Dallas, and alumni and evidence of its outstanding music program can be seen all over the world.
Since UNT is in Denton,TX, it will experience mild winters and hot summers. Growing up in northern Minnesota, our winters were harsh and severe; the coldest weather I've ever experienced. I have had enough cold weather in my life, and I know I will enjoy the warm climate of Denton. Warm weather puts me in a better mood, and helps me to think better, which in turn gets my creativity flowing. This, paired with the musical education, is a very good thing. Though I haven't thought about it, staying in Denton or in Texas would be an option for my post-college life, due to its choice climate. The winters would be enough to get my amateur snowboarding fix, and to throw a few snowballs.
Climate is important, sure, but the music instruction at UNT is my main concern. I can remember when I was in the eighth-grade, going to Ada, Oklahoma to see the UNT 1 o'clock jazz lab perform. The performance that is a little grey in my mind now, but I can still remember the vibe I felt from the band. I was brand new to jazz at the time, and hadn't really a clue what it was all about, but the band was so good, it didn't matter. Anyone, musician or not, could tell you that the lab band was full of good musicians, all who had excellent instruction and experience. Never, will I forget the concert, or the 15 minit conversation I had with the bands bass player(being a bass player myself, this meant alot to me, to be speaking with this outstanding player.) He gave me the first taste of what I'd have to serve as a good bass player, perfect time, sensitivity, technical ability. Though at the time, it made little sense to me, it sinks in further and further as I learn my bass more. Then, there was Mr.Seaton. I had the chance to work with him at the All-OMEA jazz band. I was very excited to hear that the jazz bass teacher from UNT was going to be our clinician. He was everything I thought he was going to be, and even more. Aside from being an amazing player, technically and innovativly, he had a very warm personallity and wasn't one to be harsh at all.
Seeing theese examples-- the fine education given, and receicved, the warm days and easy winters, made up my mind that UNT was the school I want to attend.Contact
