Flower Child - Neo Hippie Flower Child - Neo Hippie

Gilead left hip-hop alone in his early teens to listen to and study foundational rock of the 60's. Listen to him tell about it...

Alternative Hip Hop

Picture for song 'Fly on The Wall' by artist 'Gilead7'

Fly on The Wall Fly on The Wall

Gilead views his past and present on a moving slideshow and sees his existence from the perspective of an outsider. He is bound to the fate of flies: able to see a situation, but powerless to interact with it.

Hip Hop General

Art Institute Art Institute

Music as art has sadly been sabotaged by a force known as "commercial." If Gilead had an institute of art, these are the principles its music would be governed by.

Hip Hop General

Abstract, concrete, and progressive. These three words describe the artwork of Gilead7. His style has travelled through the land of standard underground hip-hop and subtle progressive urban, and landed him in a state of experimental sonic appreciation, dabbling in all genres of music. You may catch him playing wind instruments with Susan McKeown next week. You never know...
Band/artist history
I talk too much, so let's change the trend here. Started rhyming in 93, found out I sucked; tried again in '98, found out I still sucked; recorded a tape in 1999, got a bit better; practiced and recorded a tape in 2000, still getting better; joined a crew (Transparent Frequency) and recorded a CD in 2001, lyrics good but delivery as bad as postal workers who burn the mail; recorded a single in 2002 that made me feel tough (Invincible), getting stronger; dropped an ep called "Stories of Sorcery in 2003," tried rhymimg like Gandelf the Grey, very pleasant, performed drum and bass with DJ Grand Markey; also joined Visual Recordings and ReServed Records in 2003; in 2004, I'm working on "The Darkroom" for ReServed Records. After which I will cease to MC and explore other forms of audio, such as Celtic folk music. buy "Stories of Sorcery" at www.jydist.com. Type in "Stories of Sorcery" in the search engine. That was still long...man
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Certainly. Several places in Chicago, such as the Note, SubT, Ethio Cafe, the Big Horse, Chase Cafe, Judson College, etc. Metro needs to call me though...I immensely enjoy the excitement and energy of a live show. Special moments: At one show, my guitarist and I couldn't perform a song we did together due to technical problems. We both stood there speechless for about 2 minutes while the crowd sliced us with sharp eyes. Painful.
Your musical influences
Common (used to be a big influence, but not so much anymore; very talented artist), Bahamadia, GZA, Breeze Brewin (beyond words), etc. As of recent: Susan McKeown, M.F. Doom (thanks for gettin' me into that guy S.B...I'd never really listened to him in depth), Robust (I hope you like the track he did with me Jeff/K, it's in the music section), Plumb, Llama, Luscious Jackson, Listener (peep that "Whispermoon") etc.
What equipment do you use?
Acid, Goldwave, Reason, Logic, etc.
Anything else?
"Farewell County Carlow and the girls I adore Farewell County Carlow where the big ships do roar Where the small trout and salmon on the sandy banks lie With my line and my hook for catch them I try" Story of my life...
