Band/artist history
J'laryn was born in Atlanta, GA, on June 5,
1982. He was raised in the Charleston, SC, in the
punk and industrial genres as well as the thriving
hardcore scene. MTV introduced him to such artists as
Nine Inch Nails and Ministry when he was seven years
old. These bands led him to more of the genre, and he
began listening to Skinny Puppy and Wax Trax! artists
such as Sister Machine Gun, KMFDM, Coil and My Life
with the Thrill Kill Kult. At age 9, he bought his
favorite album: Skinny Puppy's Mind: The Perpetual
Intercourse. He met Vyrss (Thomas Frysinger) of DSS
at age 12. Vyrss was amazed and impressed that
such a young child had such obscure and good taste in
music. J'laryn first picked up a guitar and learned
to play it in a severe bout of depression. He says he
needed something to live for; he was suicidal and in
the sixth grade. He then joined the short-lived garage
metal band DeathWish, then moved on to the punk band
Propane. "They were horrible," he laughs. "I had
barely picked up a guitar at the time."
He started playing keyboards and guitar for
DSS in the ninth grade. At the time, he says, they
were a noize band, "Zeni Geva meets Throbbing Gristle.
Very Merzbow."
J'laryn became the mastermind of TH0RN 1N MY
3Y3Z, under the moniker PR3C10U5. It was his attempt
to fuse the genres of hardcore and industrial. He did
all of the samples, drum machines, vocals and some
keyboards, with the help of XAL3PH (Matt Sabol).
"After that," he says, "it was lots of randomness...
punk, hardcore punk, and I did a track or two for a
couple of rap groups."
When asked what instruments he can play,
J'laryn laughed and said, "Everything. I mean, give
me anything and some time to learn it, and I'll get it.
For fucksake, I've played the sitar on a track!" His
favorite instruments are keyboards and his computer.
J'laryn says La Belle Dame Sans Merci is a
solo project of synthpop industrial dance. His music
is influenced mostly by God Module, Skinny Puppy,
Assemblage 23, VNV Nation, New Order, De/Vision,
Depeche Mode, :wumpscut:, and bands of the first wave
Wax Trax! Records. He is currently not involved in any
side projects.
When asked what influences his songs, he says,
"Emotion in general, really. Worries about decisions.
That sort of thing." He also mentions regret, love,
life experiences, loss, disparity, pain, and religion.
"Also it's my own personal philosophies on life, you
know, not some political crap because that's temporal.
I mean, Crass is a brilliant band, but all their stuff
is about what was going on in the 70s. The ideas don't
last. I want people to be able to listen to my music
through all time."Have you performed in front of an audience?Yes, I play live. In South Carolina and Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Got all fucked up on 'tussin and the cops busted our show.
