After a year of rehearsing and playing numerous gigs, the band spent some time at Raven St. Studios to do pre-production work for their debut album. In the fall of 1998 Dopamine went into Sound of One Hand Studios with producer Marty Jones (Furnaceface, This Minor Tremble) to record the debut self-titled CD. Released in August 1999, the CD has captured the raw energy of the band, sounds amazing, and features an interactive track with songs lyrics, live video, picture gallery, and even a custom Dopamine video game.
Band/artist history
The musical journey started in early 1997 when Kenneth Fraser moved to Ottawa (hometown of Alanis Morrissette and Tom Green) in search of a band to jam with. On his first night in town, Kenny headed down to The Nox (Ottawa University bar) to check out his good friends in Ritual play a show. It was there that he ran into former bandmate Andre Bourbonnais and mutual friend Jay Cote, and the three decided to get together to jam the following week. Although both Andre and Jay were in other bands at the time, after the first jam together they knew that meeting up with Kenny was no coincidenceit was meant to be. Named after their favourite neurotransmitter in the brain, DOPAMINE plays a blend of alternative rock with solid grooves, catchy vocal melodies, and great versatility. With influences from bands like Primus to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Dopamine does not stick to one style of music, and appeals to a wide range of listeners. "We do not like to restrict ourselves musically. Being open minded is essential for us to let out the proper emotions that we want to express in our music," explains Kenny. The band takes pride in the craft of writing songs and it shows in the music.
