About fairytale love in the real world

Acoustic Folk

I'm a versatile and energetic performer whose best feature, I think, is my empassioned voice that can make you feel what I sing. I do mostly original pieces of a folkish, filkish sound with a strong traditional Celtic base, plus a few actual traditional pieces besides. I've been compared to many great women in music, both past and present, and it's enough variation that I'm convinced my style is actually unique. Much of my music is also inspired by my Pagan spirituality.
Band/artist history
I had no intention of being a singer/songwriter! Through most of high school, I was the quiet one with the glasses and braces who never had a date and was always the last one picked at baseball. After high school, still very insecure, I joined the SCA, and one day dared to sing in a bardic competition. I won. So I sang again at another event, something different - and the more I sang, the more I found I was in demand. I fell in love with that feeling of singing around a bardic fire, or silencing a room. I began to dream of maybe making a living at this. I recorded an album and sold copies at events, and uploaded it to mp3.com. I began to gather a fan base. I sold over a hundred copies of my first, self-produced album, "Of Dragons and Unicorns." Through mp3.com, I met Kevyn LeBlanc, guitarist and songwriter for the Pagan goth rock band Gallows Hill, a sort of a New England Inkubus Sukkubus-like project. We formed a side project called Avalon Burning (epic metal with fantasy themes that everyone seems to love or hate.) When his lead singer for GH quit he asked me to record vocals for his music tracks, and we were a huge hit. We began to make a name for ourselves and gather a following. I went out to Maine, where the other band members lived, to do some recording, make a couple of videos and play some gigs. Though it was quite successful, after that the personality conflicts between Roy Adams, keyboardist, and Kevyn, shattered the band. Roy, who had all the equipment and all the tracks and footage, refused to let us have any of the original recordings, though he had no intention of using them himself. Though Kevyn moved west so we could make a go of it, it didn't work out, he ended up having to pawn his guitars and moved back to Maine. I hope it will work out in the future, because Roy, though talented, is replacable, but I'm not sure it will. After that, I became discouraged, suffered from depression, and tried to focus on "getting a real job." I bounced from one nowhere seasonal position to another. I guess people know I'm just not happy if I'm not creating my art! But in the spring, when all other jobs failed to pan out and the situation became pretty desperate, I began busking and playing the local coffee shops again. Now I'm back in business on my own project, approaching from a fantasy, traditional, and Pagan focus, and recording a new album for this Midsummer. I hope to regather the fans I used to have and maybe go somewhere real with it all this time. Nothing would give me greater joy than to be able to devote my life to making a living at my bardic, musical arts.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I believe that a musician should be, at heart, a performer. I love to play live and nothing gives me greater joy than interacting with an audience who appreciates what I do. Mostly I stick around my home town of Vernon, BC, Canada, but I like to travel and have played as far east as Maine.
Your musical influences
Lots of musical influences, though I don't know if this will clarify! Heather Alexander, Loreena McKennitt, Alanis Morisette, Billie Holiday, Inkubus Sukkubus, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Leslie Fish, Cheryl Crow, Sarah McLachlan, Sarah Brightman. Doesn't help, does it? :)
What equipment do you use?
I'm very acoustic - acoustic (not even folk) guitar, bodhran, tambourine, recorder, various simple percussion, even acapella.
Anything else?
Well, I'd be happy to come and play your party, wedding, funeral, market event, fair, SCA event, Con, Ren faire, or Pagan gathering! I'm a regular at local artisan events, Farmer's Markets, coffee shops and the like. If you're curious about my spiritual path, check out my Coven's website at http://www.geocities.com/sunmoonstarcoven. I'm also a Daughter of the Flame (a Brigidine sisterhood who keeps a sacred flame for Brighid,) assistant editor for the Pagan online publication "What's Brewin'" (http://groups.msn.com/group/WBeMag) and the local coordinator for the international Pagan Pride Project.
