Charan Pagan is the solo music project for guitarist/bassist (formerly of ENSLAVIOR), writer, actor and film-maker R. Charan Pagan. R. Charan Pagan (Russ) plays many styles of music and the Charan Pagan project the outlet for his acoustic, rock, instrumental and experimental music. Russ currently plays with Mind At Wrest, the outlet for his metal music. Russ' music is always interesting, complex and extremely melodic. With influences as diverse as Randy Rhoads and Freddy Martin, Russ' music has amazing range and strong melodies.
Band/artist history
I started playing guitar at age 17. I am self-taught so I don't know any scales, chords or other rudiments of music. I play by ear and learned to play by writing songs that sounded good to me. Over the years my writing, playing and voide improved and I was able to produce some songs that I am really fond of. In 1998 I formed the SF Bay Area thrash metal band, ENSLAVIOR. We played a lot of great shows and had some great success with the band but things fell apart after a few years. I moved to Los Angeles to continue my solo work and ended up joining a couple of rock bands as a bass player because I wanted to continue to play live. Now I'm back to the solo project and I'm not sure where I'll go from here or what I'll get into. I have filmed some guitar and bass instructional videos on youtube and I hope to continue to do more.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I sometimes play live in the Los Angeles area and in the San Francisco Bay Area. LA is not a great place to play because everybody wants to basically take advantage of the artists. Clubs in SF are much better.
Your musical influences
Black Sabbath is my favorite band. I think I have a lot of the same elements in my music, being very guitar-focused, melody-driven music with dark themes. I also enjoy Iron Maiden and on occasion emulate some similar harmonies. I appreciate old Megadeth for its ferocity and attitude and I can sometimes match their ferociousness and attitude. I love Forbidden and Emerson, Lake and Palmer for their progressiveness but I like my own music to be extremely solid in the groove department so I usually keep my own music less progressive and more straightforward. I honestly love all kinds of music so I am influenced by classical music and pop as well as the harder bands.
What equipment do you use?
USA Jackson electric guitars, Ibanez basses, Ibanez and Takamine acoustic guitars, Digitech preamps and effects, Mesa amplification, Sunn speakers
Anything else?
I am a political junkie! I am anoyed and disgusted with Republicans and Democrats and I envision a day when both parties will be marginalized by less corrupt parties. I don't believe that the country can thrive while in the stranglehold of the Republican and Democratic parties. My political views are shaped by independent news media. Mainstream media news is thin, inaccurate, misleading and paid for by corporate influences that taint the information.
