Back When We Were Young Back When We Were Young
Looking back, it is love woven throughout life that takes us from onememorable event to another. Childhood friends become lovers. Then theymarry. Finally, they become parents. Why?-- all because of love.
Paul Smith's music has an appeal to
a wide range of listeners, including
those who enjoy Folk, Pop, Ballads,
Country Western, Blue Grass and
Soft Rock. His sound cannot be
classified in any one category for
it crosses over. Still, it has roots in
them all because of the affection
he has for so many kinds of music.
Paul has been noted for his gentle
voice and harmonies and the way
they richly blend with his finger
picking style of acoustical guitar
work. After all these years, Paul’s
music continues to touch the hearts
of those who listen to him.
Listen to Paul’s songs, and hear how
his arrangements and finger-picking
style complements his voice and harmonies.Band/artist history
I’ve been playing the guitar since the mid sixties. In my family there was
always some music being played by someone. My mother and sister both
played the piano, my brothers the guitar, and my father played the trumpet.
Dad played in the big band days, Benny Goodman and the like. He must
have been quite good for he was offered to play in a big name band at that
time, but he didn't do that. Instead, he played his way through medical
school and became a dentist.
As a boy, I played the trumpet in the school band. I remember that in 7th
grade I was playing in the High School band, sitting in the second chair
next to Juniors and Seniors. My father's influence and tutoring played a
large role in that.
When I was 12 years old, my father died. From then on, I found it hard to
pick up the trumpet. I still had that inner desire to make music though. My
brother, Tom, had an old Kay guitar laying around the house, so I started
picking it up and plucking around on the old thing.
I’ve never taken lessons. What I would do is listen closely and watch
others as they would play and learn by what they did. Also, I would buy
song books, read and study them. At first, I would love to listen to and play
anything by the Beatles. That was in my High School days.
My style is more finger picking and acoustical now. I’m not sure why,
but my leaning was toward the acoustical sound of guitar. To me it's
always been pleasing and relaxing to listen to the soothing melody of a
well played and well built acoustical guitar. Even to this day, I never seem
to tire of the rich natural tones that come from simple strings and wood.
After graduation from ISU, I made a go of music. For years I played
professionally, playing and singing in restaurants and Inns in the Midwest.
My agent booked me in places that took me out west. I traveled to Texas,
New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, the Nebraska and Wisconsin. My music
has taken me places and allowed me to see and do things that I otherwise
would have never done.
I’ve always wanted to write and record my own music. Until recently, I
haven't done much of that, but that’s what I’m up to now. My first CD,
Relax And Reminisce, has 11 songs by some of my favorite artists. Then,
there are 3 that I composed. You can purchase that CD off my website at
www.paulsmithmusic.net. Right now though, as far as recording goes, I’m
working only on my own creations. It's what I want to do. Others have
been telling me that's what they want to hear, so that’s what I'm doing.Have you performed in front of an audience? Not at present. Right now I'm working on writing, recording and making my music available on the internet.
Your musical influences
I began to get interested in those who had the acoustical kind of sound.
Peter Paul & Mary were big in those days, and they had a huge influence on
me. Gordon Lightfoot, Simon & Garfunkel, John Denver, James Taylor, and
Jim Crosce were some others that I loved and that shaped my taste and
style of music. What equipment do you use?
I have a Martin D35 six string and a twelve string Yamaha 2500 that has been customized. Also, I have a Fender bass and a banjo.Anything else?
