Life on Mars Life on Mars
For the last few years, The Trouble with Harry has been brewing a unique blend of original rock n roll, flavored with funk, blues, jazz, reggae, soul. and groove. Formed by frontman and songwriter Harry Faulkner, the group features a cast of well known Charlottesville musicians. TWH has played all around town--Millers, Outback Lodge, Mountain View Grill, and Fridays after Five--and has a loyal following of people that have been coming out to hear Harrys tunes since the 80s. This demo cd represents just a small fraction of the TWH sound--their music coherently blends a variety of styles as diverse as the members of the group. Harrys songs speak for themselves--these carefully crafted stories of people and life hit home--no bubblegum pop here.
Band/artist history
Harry Faulkner has been writing, playing, and singing his songs for decades. Hes played his songs around C-ville for years in a variety of settings--from solo perfromances with an acoustic guitar to the popular early 90s duo Down Boy Down that featured Harry and his songs paired with Boyd Tinsleys fiddle. The two also played Harrys tunes together in the rock flavored Boyd Tinsley Band. When not writing songs, Harry is an honored teacher at CATEC. His songs hit home with stories and characters that are true to life--in fact his experience with troubled students at the crossroads of life has inspired a song or two. Ranging from full throttle rock to funk, jazz, blues, r and b, reggae, and more--Harrys tunes are not your regular three chord rock, but more along the lines of artists like Steely Dan.
Ryan Hughes moved to Charlottesville for Architecture School in 1995, and has been a part of the music scene ever since. He has played (bass) in numerous bands--Simple Green, Token Jones (funk, rock, reggae), and The Guano Boys (reggae, ska, afro), sharing stages with the Meters and the Itals along the way. When not using his a-school skills as a designer and builder of hi-tech furniture and installations, he plays bass and keyboards as a member of the jazz-fusion band Buttr and the electronica project Mixed Bag. He also plays guitar, keyboards, percussion, mandolin, and drums, and explores the relationship between the rythyms and structure of architecture and music.
Kurt Dressel has been a staple of the music scene in C-ville for 23 years. A talented guitarist, Kurt also plays violin, bass, drums, mandolin, and keyboards to name a few. He has played in numerous bands--C-villes first punk band the A.D.s, as well as Yattz (reggae, funk), Jimmy O and the Ready Teds (rockabilly), Wild Things (funk, often featuring Carter and Leroi from DMB), H20 Buffaloes, Wolves in the Kitchen, The Howlin Homeboys, Big City Ramblers, and Glass Babies--sharing stages with DMB, Blues Traveler, Indecision, and Delbert McClinton along the way. Currently Kurt makes the tasty goods in the kitchen at Integral Yoga, while also playing in Mixed Bag. A master of effects and tone, Kurts playing is as spicy and tasty as his cooking--his guitar can sound like anything from a sax to an alien invasion!
Kent Raine is the man behind drumkit, and behind the scenes as technical director at Live Arts Theater in Charlottesville. He has played and toured all over the east coast and in the carribean in a number of bands, and melds a range of styles and influences into a drum approach that is uniquely Kent. Swing Piggy, Echoes Farm, Indescision, and Savoy Truffle are some of the bands Kent has banged out beats for. Kent also is a skilled violin maker, though he has yet to take our encouragement in finding a way to incorporate his violins into his drumset (Jimmy Page watch out!).
