Combining of the acoustic imagery of Atlanta's own John Mayer with the diversity of Dave Matthews or Counting Crows, listening to the music of Main Street East is like listening to life's soundtrack for anyone who has lived. Every song has the ability to affect the listener with both a tapping foot and a past regret.
Band/artist history
“We wanted to make music that could bring a smile to your face, yet evoke memories of a past love, because if your music does not come from the heart, where can it come from?” says Main Street East lead vocalist Steven Schuler. Their self-titled EP marks the entrance of one of music’s most dynamic and artistic up-and-coming groups. For their EP, the Atlanta-based quartet joined forces with producer/songwriter Clay Cook (John Mayer). Main Street East - compromised of Craig Eck (drums), Tristan Brown (lead guitar, keyboards, vocals), George Marlow (bass), and Steven Schuler (lead vocals, acoustic guitar) - blend rock, pop, and contemporary into a strong musical cocktail. It’s only fitting that the band members, who draw their influences from everybody from Counting Crows, Dave Matthews, and even Atlanta’s own John Mayer, grew up in the heart of the South - Atlanta, GA to be exact - where southern hospitality reigns supreme, providing a perfect breeding ground for the Main Street East sound. Main Street East has covered a lot of territory since their inception: Schuler and Eck began writing/rehearsing together at the age of 14, over the next few years the boys linked up with bassist Zach Lawson (who eventually left for personal reasons), they found former bassist Allen Rodgers and the band played their first gig at Atlanta’s Hard Rock Café. They maintained a steady gig as the Atlanta Brewing Company’s house band, found the final puzzle piece in 2002 through Brown’s abilities and have since performed all over the south while writing and recording new material in their spare time for a full-length LP to be released in the fall. Schuler states, “Simply put, we wanted to take our emotions and make them musical, just like any serious artist.” 2003 saw the greatest changes in the Main Street East lineup. Tristan Brown has made his home as the Lead Guitarist and Keyboardist. In July of 2003, a bassist and graduate of the Atlanta Institute of Music by the name of George Marlow was welcomed to the fold to complete the line up known today as Main Street East. Every member admits openly that their present hometown of Atlanta - where they’ve each lived for over a decade - has also become an important aspect of Main Street East’s musical identity. This is not surprising, since the band is often tied-in with the acoustic/folk/rock scene, a culture that is closely associated with the Georgia lifestyle. Nevertheless, Main Street East seem to draw their fanbase from many different walks of life. “Our audience is pretty much a bunch of people just like ourselves; meaning they don’t fit into any specific category,” Schuler says. “You can find a little bit of everything at our shows.”
