'Arkitect' of the reconstruction of hip-hop. Bringing 'gospel from the block', E.S.T. combines lyrical artistry and banging beats to spread the truth of Jesus Christ to the hip-hop generation.
Band/artist history
E.S.T. began performing as a member of the group Hip Hop Nation that formed on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1997. After two years of performing alongside other popular local acts like Sankofa and Tyfu, he left the group in order to focus on academics and other social pursuits. After fully giving his life to Christ in 2001 and becoming a licensed minister in 2002, the Lord led him to begin using his talents once again, but this time as a tool to showcase Christ and the glory of His name. In 2004, E.S.T. stepped his game up, releasing his first album, REBUILT: Da EP, which was received well from fans, and in the beginning of 2005, he was honored with an opportunity to perform at the Holy Hip Hop Awards and Artist Showcase in Atlanta, GA. Since then, he has performed for crowds varying in number from 20 to 2000, and is preparing for his first full-length album, STREET PHARMACIST, to be released on the PD Soul Entertainment label.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I love live performances. There's no better way to make a spiritual connection, I believe, than to be in the same space as that person. Only live can one see the passion I have as the Spirit moves throughout the show. Every time I'm on stage is special to me, because if it had not been for God leading me and blessing this ministry, I would have no opportunities to give of myself in this way.
Your musical influences
The musical influences that helped to define my rhyming style are all secular, since I began rhyming when I was in still reveling in the world. My primary lyrical and musical influences were A Tribe Called Quest, Def Squad, Talib Kweli and Mos Def. My primary Christian influence is the Cross Movement, as I feel they are the prototype holy hip hop act in many ways, laying a foundation of artistic and spiritual integrity that has placed them at the forefront of this musical movement. Currently, as I develop as an artist, it's the competition that pushes me. As long as there are artists that enthusiastically spit rhymes to kill, it will motivate me to spit rhymes for life.
