Funmibi Tracee Atanda-Owo better known by her stage name Tracee Owo is a Nigerian-American singersongwriter and model. She currently attends Parsons The New School for Design majoring in Design and Management. Although her love for artistic and creative freedom brought her to Parsons, it is Tracee’s ambitious spirit that leads her to pursue her dreams and make them a reality in New York City.
Tracee was born and raised in the Washington, DC metro area to Nigerian parents. “Being raised by Nigerian parents brought about a cultural upbringing for me,” Owo states, “I remember listening to my father’s vintage records of Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, and James Brown at the age of 9, while he explained to me the true meaning of the lyrics.”
After the numerous encounters with her father’s records and with her older sister, Nancy, also as inspiration, Owo found a new love in music. At age 11, Tracee began playing the violin, modeling in fashion shows, and performing in various dance groups and musical ensembles throughout school. It was in high school, when she began writing poetry and playing the guitar. This later on progressed into a collection of songs and it was then that Owo realized her gift for songwriting.
As a Singer/Songwriter, Tracee’s inspiration ranges from a Salvadore Dali painting to a Donny Hathaway song. She firmly believes in the phrase, “Creativity and inspiration has no boundaries.” This is evident in her music, which blends soulful melodies and arrangements heavily infused with R&B and Rock guitar riffs.
Tracee has cited an eclectic range of artists who have influenced her musical style. She grew up listening to Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Sarah Vaughn, Michael Jackson, John Lennon and Jimmy Hendrix. She also quotes being influenced by current artists such as Kim Burrell, Ryan Leslie, Kanye West, Alanis Morisette, Beyoncé, Adele and Lauryn Hill. “I’m not only inspired by their musical geniuses, but also by their stories that remind me about the journey we take in this life.”
Tracee Owo has yet to reach the status of her musical influences, but her forceful drive and ambition will keep her on the path to success.Your musical influences
