Band/artist history
I started really playing guitar when I was 9 or 10. I learned a few chords from my dad and started trying to pick stuff out by ear. I'd just try to play all the riffs I thought were badass. After a couple years I took some lessons, and around the same time I started symphonic band in school playing trombone. I learned some theory, I had an opportunity to start seeing it from a few different angles and try to everything as a whole instead of just focusing on my little world, either guitar or trombone, and... everything went downhill from there. I was trying to learn how to play everything I could get my hands on. I taught myself some drum rudiments, I'd try to play other brass instruments, I actually played baritone and tuba and sousaphone in high school... my sister took some piano lessons, and I'd go through her lesson books and do some of her lessons.
At some point I realized I was forgetting the most important instrument of all, the voice! I'm really actually kinda pissed that I didn't start singing earlier, but such is life. :)
Your musical influences
Queen, Soundgarden, Avenged Sevenfold, Days Of The New, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Muse...
There's other music that I enjoy and listen to that I wouldn't necessarily say has influenced my songwriting/playing/singing, at least not as much... I do enjoy some classical, some Bach, some Rachmaninoff... The Planets suite by Holst is one of my favorites. I don't listen to as much classical as I should. I got really Dream Theater for a while, mostly for the "wow" factor. Guitar-wise I've gotten into a lot of the same guitarists that most budding guitar players get into, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Randy Rhoads...
What equipment do you use?
For guitars I'm mostly using a Dean Hardtail, a dual humbucker mahogany-bodied maple-necked Warmoth built guitar, an Ovation acoustic, and two other cheapo acoustics, one of which is in Nashville tuning. Bass guitar is an OLP MM3 5 string. Guitar and bass amp sounds are either a Rocktron Chameleon preamp or Amplitube 2. Everything is recorded into Cakewalk Sonar.
