MiG-21 was the main collaborative project of independent/experimental New Zealand home-recording label kRkRkRk recordings from mid 2001-mid 2003. The regular members comprised: Mikel Goodwin (bass guitar, occasional electric guitar, backing vocals), Ed Wilson (guitar, backing vocals, occasional keyboards), J-mz Robinson (guitar, backing vocals) and David Khan (lead vocals, rhythm programmes, samples, sound engineering and production, keyboards). Basically an industrial pop group, MiG-21 provided an excuse for some of the core artists associated with the label to get together, make noise and have a good time. Unlike some other kRkRkRk projects, MiG-21 was never intended to be taken too seriously. Having fun with friends and music was the main objective. Nevertheless, in hindsight, an intriguing Gen X nihilism and disenchantment pervades our recordings - along with some great, trashy pop moments.
Band/artist history
Featuring the talents of David Khan, Mikel Goodwin, Ed Wilson & J-mz Robinson, MiG-21 formed in June 2001 & enjoyed favourable audience reactions from the very start. Very much a pop-rock project with some industrial noise & avant-rock underpinnings, MiG-21 combine smooth, melodic bass playing & electronic rhythms (utilising custom-made sampled sounds) with harsh, biting, free-form guitar work & multi-layered vocals riding upon a wave of distortion & delay. Although not as deadly serious as some earlier kRkRkRk projects, there are punk-rock, political overtones in the group's music - suitably corrupted by a Generation X nihilism & disenchantment ....from http://go.to/krkrkrk/ Formed June 2001. First recording "MF" kRk118 released August 2001. First live performances about this time also. Second album "Hot To Trotsky" kRk129 to be released January 2004. Following the departure of guitarist Ed Wilson overseas in mid 2003 the group has entered hibernation (apart from finishing off recordings for the 2nd album)
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Only ever performed live in New Zealand (Christchurch, Lytellton, Wellington) which might as well be the south pole as far as the rest of the world is concerned. All our gigs were special though - even the catastrophic ones!
Your musical influences
All sorts of stuff. Neubauten, Kraftwerk, Swans, Birthday Party, Joy Division, Fushitsusha, Bowie, Stooges, Punk, Glam, Industrial, Noise blah blah...
What equipment do you use?
Ha ha, we're NOT "techno or electronica by a long shot (just sad old fucks trying to rock, yawn...) - still there is a fair amount of technology in the music. Most of our songs are grounded by simple and repetitive rhythmic loops. These comprise totally custom-made sounds sampled, processed and sequenced using an Ensoniq ASR10 workstation. Yes, it's tragic drum-machine-based music - not electronica - but too electronic to truly rock. However, at least we make all our own sounds! The remainder of the noise consists of dual guitars (often detuned and "treated" to hell), straight forward bass guitar and vocals massively warped through distortion and delay effects. For the sound geeks out there, the vox distortion is provided by an antiquated Ibanez SM-9 super metal pedal with a signal-to-noise of about 1:100!
