A Perfect Kiss is a young 4-piece indie rock band from the Annapolis, MD area that represent a glorious collaboration of passionate and unique artistic expression through music. The music is based on the foundations of punk and hardcore, yet it branches out to explore elements of a large number of different vaguely named genres such as "shoegazer," "space rock," and "emo/screamo." A Perfect Kiss's newest music promises to be ethereal, emotive, and running the gamut between moderate/subtle to abrasive/spastic. However, anticipate extreme diversity as far as mood is concerned. Look for a new full length album on Point Five Limey Records and a U.S. tour this coming summer, 2004.Band/artist history
A Perfect Kiss started out in the winter of '98 when Justin Lloyd, the drummer for a band called Hybred from Annapolis, MD wanted to start a solo project playing guitar. He later learned that his best friend Kenny was interested in teaming up on guitar duty with him. They got together and wrote a bunch of songs in the winter of 2000. After putting many ads on the internet searching for musicians that enjoyed similar music, a bassist named Jarid came across the ad and asked if he could be in the band. They got together along with Jarid's friend Matt on drums and had a practice merely because Matt and Jarid claimed to love Mineral. Kenny and Justin were obsessed with Mineral at the time, so things clicked pretty well as they wrote songs and practiced. Those practices were great, and they even played two shows. They were deemed a "heavy mineral" by certain members of the audience quite ironically. Unfortunately, Matt was pressured to leave the band because of outside obligations such as his other band called Statue Spred (later called Clockwork, now defunct). Shortly thereafter, Jarid left for relatively the same reasons (he was in the same band). Around spring time in 2001, Brad, the guitarist from the punk band (well, they were punk at the time) Item 16 said he would help the band out on the bass until someone permanent was found. Item 16 broke up so he joined the band full time. Later, after placing more ads for drummers, they came across John Stitcher (ex-Second String). He played with APK for a little while. The band soon thereafter broke up due to some differing goals and personal things going on. The band reformed again around the winter of 2001 with a new drummer, Matt (a different Matt), the bassist of the now defunct Fade. The reformation was due to the band feeling like it was truly complete. The band all finally found a great chemistry and friendship. Months later, Justin and Kenny's other band West Memphis Three, a band that was formed while APK didn't exist, broke up. By default, and much to their content, APK was considered a first priority band to all members. Within a few months after the debut album was recorded, Matt was forced to leave the band because of a last minute, uncontrollable college-related circumstance. They quickly found Kevin Stevens as a replacement. His style was very different, but it added a new twist to APK, and the new material was quite a change from the old songs. The song structure started getting more off-the-wall. The band started experimenting with many guitar effects, odd time signatures, more complex and intricate drum and guitar parts, and other new things. In the summer of 2003, Kevin left the band because of personal differences, and around a month or two later, Brad left because of differing goals and school related things. APK was nearly finished just because of discouragement and the lack of being able to find musicians that felt like a family, that were completely committed to the band, and that were on the same level musically. The band had many shows coming up right as Kevin left, and musicians were needed to play those shows. They quickly started rehearsing with Rosewood's drummer Steve (Rosewood was a side project of Justin's) and Kahz of the bands Jepetto and Quattro on bass. Steve fit so perfectly that the band asked him to be permanent. An old friend of the band, Jeremiah, who used to play in one of Justin's old side projects (I'm Sorry Damien) wanted to fill the bass position, so after trying him out, the band was extremely happy with asking him to be full-time. The band is now as satisfied as they could ever be with the current line up, and especially the 100% assurance that each member wants to be in the band and give it their all. Not to say that previous line ups had non-dedicated members, but the chemistry, friendship, family, and ability to write between the members is amazing to each one personally for the first (and hopefully) the last time.Have you performed in front of an audience? We play live as much as possible and wherever we can. Hometown shows as well as a lot of touring. We absolutley LOVE it. The best moments are when kids out of town know our songs and they sing along.
