Im born and raised in Sweden, and I am currently 19 years old. I produce Melodic Trance, and sometimes a bit harder Trance aswell.
Ive been at it since summer 2003, when I discovered the swedish software "Propellerheads Reason". At that point I had no experience with music-creation whatsoever, but I kept at it, and soon found my own way for successfully creating songs. After several really lame, but atleast musically correct, tracks, I had an idea of what I was doing, and after that things just started happening.
Ive been at it since summer 2003, when I discovered the swedish software "Propellerheads Reason". At that point I had no experience with music-creation whatsoever, but I kept at it, and soon found my own way for successfully creating complete songs. After several really lame, but atleast musically correct, tracks, I had an idea atleast of what I was doing, and after that things just started happening. I have listened constantly to trance music for 5 years, so I knew what I wanted my tracks to sound like, and during my period of learning the basics of music production, the musical content was thankfully never my main problem. What was 1000 times harder, I thought, was mixing and equilizing. Those 2 subjects, equilizing in particular, I never found a "... for dummies" on. Instead, it was hard work that payed off. Simply by doing things over and over again, I eventually developed a feel for those things. Thought I am still very much still learning the basics of certain aspects, its still nice for me to load up a song of mine from 6 months ago, and being able to hear the difference in quality. It is also very rewarding to notice that things that took me a day to complete 6 months ago, now only take an hour or two.
In my opinion, Reason 2.5 has played an enormous part in helping me get started.
Had I known today what an immense task it really is; starting in music production, alone, without any past experience or guidance whatsoever, I doubt I would have even bothered firing up Reason for the first time.
But thanks to Reason's compactness, and the extremely well-written manual, I got all the basics down very quickly. Synthesis, mixing, compression, sequencing, MIDI were terms I knew nothing of untill Reason. After getting a good grip on Reason, it was no problem for me to include Cubase in the music process aswell. All the basics of Cubase I had already seen in Reason, where I had also gotten them explained in an understandable fashion.
To this day I have yet to use a single VST in my tracks, simply because Reason, in my opinion, is everything you really need. I also recently excluded Cubase from my equipment, so now Reason 3.0 is my only tool. I also tend to use ReBirth (also by the Propellerheads) to emulate TB-303's (coupled with the Scream4 in Reason, you can get truly mindbending results of acid lines.
I get influenced from 2 major sources: Hard Trance duo Alphazone (www.skywarp.de), but mainly now-retired swiss producer Marco "Reverb" Guardia (producer of the projects Flutlicht and S.H.O.K.K.).
Sequencing and Mastering:
Propellerheads Reason 3.0 (www.propellerheads.se).
Wave Editing:
Sony Sound Forge 7.0
On a final note, I advise everyone even remotly interested in music production to visit "http://www.reason-refills.net" where you can find alot of useful samples aswell as SoundFont and Refill files for Cubase, Reason and whatnot.
