Biography of Butchashop “We R the Difference” is a slogan that was used by Butchashop, a hip-hop duo in Richmond, VA, that wanted to get people to listen to their music without turning the other cheek and without giving them a chance. A campaign was started whereby the duo asked people to log onto a website without knowing what to expect. The end result-a rapidly increasing fan base. “We had to do something different to get people’s attention and it worked.” Butchashop, which consist of two members, Kingfurst and Mic Skillz, has been making music and performing together for the past six years. Moses Crump, aka Mic Skillz, is originally from Brooklyn, New York, and moved to Virginia in 2003. Mic Skillz grew up listening to reggae and did not start rapping until he was about 14 years old. Influenced by his brother, Smack, and his aunt, Ms. Linda (of World-A-Girl, a reggae group), Mic’s passion for making his own music was born. Hip-hop artists like Pac, Biggie, Nas and even Kingfurst were also influential during his growth. Mic really did not take rapping and making music seriously until he moved to VA and was connected with Kingfurst. He wanted to learn any and everything that King could teach him about making music. Kingfurst (Ronald Anderson) was born and raised in the north side of Richmond. Kingfurst started doing music about 17 years ago. He was influenced by his uncle Steve, who was a DJ for a local radio station, WANT. Other artists who were influential on his musical style were Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Eminem and a host of others. Kingfurst started out as a dancer, but slowly converged into rapping when he realized the admiration that rappers received. From there he started a group which consisted of his two younger cousins and his girlfriend. Despite the fact that the group had a nice combination of harmony, they were unable to get the recognition they deserved. This was due largely to the fact that they were using beats from songs by artists who were already well-known. This lack of success motivated Kingfurst to buy a keyboard and make his own music, which gave his group a more unique sound. Eventually, he began writing and producing music for other local artists. He put together a team of rappers, hoping one of them would gain national or even worldwide recognition. A couple of his artists actually achieved real success-Joe Skeet and Redrum. Kingfurst and Mic Skillz met on New Year ’s Day of 2004 and have been performing all over Richmond’s open mic scene and showcases ever since. Throughout their travels, Butchashop has made a nice buzz locally by performing at various venues and distributing their first mix tape, “Furst Aid,” which is receiving great feedback. Butchashop currently has two singles out that are making a lot of noise, “Shawty” and “Luv on a Speakah,” both of which were produced by Kingfurst. Butchashop was invited to perform at the re-opening ceremonies at Battery Park Recreation after the tragic flooding of 2009. Their sound is “hip-hop all day;” the music is energetic and fun, with a range of versatility. Despite the fact that Mic and King came from very different backgrounds they remain “one-in-da-same” as Butchashop.
