Being primarily a bass player since '74, I found one can't write very much music via that instrument so I picked up a Synthesizer after my father's death to express myself musically. Digital recording brought everything full circle and I now have gotten back into playing guitar.
I have in the past. From Bars to Colleges to public and private parties, but those days are long gone...
The Beatles primarily. They're the whole reason I had to have a guitar way back in '64. Since then, Paul McCartney's solo work has been a big influence in my musical life. ELO also comes to mind, as well as Yes, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Queen, Alan Parson's Project, and Harry Nilsson. I should also add that all the 45 RPM records from the late 50's - early 60's Top 40 that my sister left at home when she went to college were very influential in my early musical life.
