Riverside-based rock-pop hyphenate YUCCA PIE
was formed by Dr. Richard Creme (lower left corner)
of Southwest Technical and Agricultural College as a
component of his thesis on Random Average Talent
Theory. In his thesis, he attempted to prove that a successful combination of talented people could be chosen randomly from the telephone directory.
The theory attempted to prove once and for all,
political leaders, scientists, engineers, and yes, rock musicians, could be found in society randomly. After minutes of dialing, YUCCA PIE was born.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
As a young slave of the Filipino drug and smuggling lord El Bisa, Les Juno De'Betta escaped from the secret island encampment only because
his captors did not think he could survive the two-mile swim in shark-infested waters to the next island. They were partially right. De Betta swam back to shore after the criminals laughed themselves to sleep on the beach. He stole a speed
boad (equipped with about a kilo of speed) and made his way toward friendlier shores. He lived with his itinerant cousin Jerry in the US until the day he received a phone call from Dr. Creme. Les is the lead singer and poet.
Is Dr. Pepper a real doctor? Is Doctor Scholls a doctor. OK, he was, but he's dead. Was Doc Holiday a doctor, or a dentist. 'Nuff said. The artist-scientist-nudist that became Dr. Richard Creme came to be when a witness reportedly heard Creme shouting from his hotel room, repeatedly (to his female guests that evening), "Does it hurt when I do this? How about when I do...this!" Dr. Creme holds a PhD. in Plausibility and plays lead guitar.
Self-styled alien-conspiracy debunker and auto detailer, Rev. Harvard Mann is the only member of the band who claims he was waiting by the phone for Dr. Creme to call that afternoon. "The Random Talent theory has been around for years," Mann said. "Dr. Creme was the only man brave enough to pursue the seemingly absurd and trite, yet plausible." Some claim Rev. Mann was just screening his calls that day, as he avoided creditors, but the theory was debunked by Rev. Mann, along with several other theories and legal claims he was involved in at the time.
Originally named Colin Lyon by his parents, Crash experienced a kind of bizarre, silly, and irrelevant rebirth by joining YUCCA PIE as the band percussionist in 2001. Only later did he realize the job required that he play the drums in the band and not demolition. He continues his musicl studies while holding his part-time job at the Riverside Fireworks Factory.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
It's better than playing dead. And we're constantly having special moments. But we usually blame it on the cat.
