Band/artist history
The Sarasota Florida based rhyme conglomerate known as Scar Mafia is composed of seven emcees of contrasting yet cohesive styles and personalities. In the early and mid 1990s, Caliber (also known as Bang, the groups in house beat guru and older brother figure) was making a name for himself on the Florida rap scene, running with a local group called Street Cats. Surrounded by a strong buzz, Caliber wasted no time recruiting his younger brother Calibre, along with cousin Big-T (then known as L.B.), and their neighborhood clique including Smiff, Tite Snow, and Legendary. Before long, Calibers little brother and his homies were sharing the stage with, and at times stealing the stage from Street Cats as the groups began to perform together frequently. Before long the inevitable occurred and Street Cats disbanded, leaving Caliber to continue rhyming with the younger emcees, adorning the group name Scar Mafia. Scar Mafia continued to record and perform on into the end of the millennium, picking up steam with the Florida classic single No Haters. The group appeared to be headed in the right direction, but the 6 did not become 7 until late 2000. Calibre and Des Moines, IA native YoungTripp met as scholarship football players at tiny Graceland University in Lamoni, IA. The two were no more than teammates and acquaintances until an impromptu dorm-room freestyle session turned into a legendary emcee battle. While the two like to declare the outcome a draw, the battle caused both to leave the dorm with both a mutual respect and a similar dream. Tripp would soon travel to Sarasota to meet the other members, and was officially added to the group in early 2001. The groups first release as a fully assembled unit was 2002s Back Up When U C the Paw released on Pound 4 Pound Records. Spearheaded by Big-T and Tite Snows Real Nigga, Calibre and Tripps Beef and the song Ten Toes Down. The hook and phrase Ten Toes Down both ideas of Smiff, have since rooted themselves in everyday Sarasota lingo. The album is rumored to have sold in the neighborhood of 10,000 units. The reason there is no known sales figure is because there was a discrepancy in the actual number of units sold, and the number reported to the group. Due to this issue, Scar and Pound 4 Pound parted officially parted ways in 2003. The groups highly anticipated sophomore album Necessary was completed but never released. Since 2003 the group has focused more heavily on the mixtape scene, releasing 3 volumes of Scar mixtapes, while also collaborating with other artists. In addition to the group effort All Da Way Street the members of Scar have each, with the full support of the group ventured into solo projects. Calibres Scar Till I Die, and YoungTripps The 23rd Hour have already dropped, and the group eagerly awaits the releases of Big-Ts Hellraiser, Smiffs Bad, and Legendarys Mind, Money, Motive. Calibers untitled project is in production, but Tite Snows YNOTWONS has been put on hold due to his current incarceration. Legal problems have always been an Achilles heel for Scar Mafia. Infact, a brief period in 2005 was the first time since Scar became a seven man group that all 7 members were free to walk the streets. Come hell or high water, prison or poor management, the group will press on, in search of the ultimate goal. Scar Mafia has been proving the deep south with good music for too long to be denied much longer.
