Save Prelude 01 Save Prelude 01

Here's a motif I've been working on. The rythm line is not 12 tone.

ok. Here's the same lead with a "normal" rythm of going down 2 frets from root and up 2 frets from root. Amazingly, I just stayed on the Aeolian minor scale instead of spreading all over the place.

Sliding Slime Sliding Slime

I used the fretless guitar to slide notes from chord to chord to create a sweet, melodic tune.

Here's an interesting fretless improv. The notes are not right on. Maybe I'll refine it into a song later.

headless mourning headless mourning

A song in minor to mourn the death of my guitar. It fell face first, and the head snapped right off! Good thing I have another fretless guitar.

This page is dedicated to the few friends who know I play an instrument. So, if you are a family member, proceed no further... I will post some of my improvs here, for you to hear. They are posted more or less in chrolological order, starting from the bottom. They are not refined, but represent new ideas since you musicians know how long it takes to perfectly compose and record a song. I hit a major stumbling block when I realized that the harmonics on the conventional 12 tone even tempered scale is imperfect. I have built a couple of fretless guitars to play the notes at the exact harmonic frequencies. (And I have an excuse to run away from the confoundingly hard 12 tone scale. I don't get it. I'm good with math...) I've always thought the current 12 tone system was flawed. There seemed to be a longing, and something was missing. My theory is that the longing is caused by the notes "pulling" towards their natural harmonic frequencies, since notes in a chord are just out of tune from each other. the 5th is ever so slightly flat. The Major 3rd and the 4th are slightly sharp. I played a conventional guitar on my earliest pieces (starting with "Early Grunge"). You can revel (or despair) in my evolution (why does it take so long?). Or is it devolution? I figure it's similar to how Van Gough developed his painting style. -heh I have posted some experiments on notes based on different denominators. The conventional 12 notes can be approximated with various notes from the denominators 2,3,4,6 & 9.

I will post some of my improvs when I have the time to convert them into MP3.
What equipment do you use?
Charvel electric guitar, Memphis (24" scale Strat copy) guitar and Hondo Les Paul copy converted into fretless. I have reduced the pickup windings from approximately 5000 turns to about 1000 to 2000 turns to brighten up the sound. I'll probably settle on about 1200 to 1500 turns for each coil in a humbucker. The experiment continues.
Anything else?
I coated the neck of my Memphis guitar with epoxy. The epoxy soaked into the wood, creating a solid bond. I had to shave the epoxy down and level the surface by hand. I later added a 1/8" strip of plexiglass. On my Hondo guitar, I removed the fretboard and glued on a 1/4" thick plexiglass strip with Elmer's Ultimate Glue. The head broke off in an accident, so I am converting a Harmony guitar neck to fretless so that it can live again!!!!!
