P4 HT computer built for recording and editing - had this built for me, just costed around 500 bucks, im really happy with it so far.
Maudio firewire solo audio interface
Audio Technica AT2020 cardiod condensor mic
Audix performance mic cable - the brand of cables really make a difference ( dont goto radioshack for this)

XLR balanced cable - dont use a vocal cable to connect ya amp to ya external souncard.
mic stand with boom adapter - you can get these anywhere for 20 bucks or more
monitors. using a generic brand of studio monitors.

Adobe Audition 1.5 - to me this is the most versatile user friendly product out. i reccomened 1.5 because 2.0 has a few flaws (just because the number is bigger doesn't means its better) recording, editing, and burning cds can be done with this.
i ve also used Sony acid before, but i ended up going back to this.

Acoustica Mixcraft - so simple but powerful. i love this software, good for mixing and recording, very simple. i know a lot of peeps who just wanna record use this.
it also has a few good built in FX, like the compressors, echos, reverbs, and equalizers.
