Holy crap! I never in a million years expected to hear the Wimps again. Indulge a lengthy tale (or skip it, it's the internet, I'll never know or be offended)
I'm a 41 year old professional in Chicago. I grew up in San Diego though. Specifically in a little suburb called Chula Vista (which oddly enough, if you know Spanish, was neither pretty nor offered any sort of view.) In the early 80s, as a high school student, I leaned toward the 'punk/alternative' scene.
I'm not exactly sure why, but during my freshman high school year, some people in my circle of friends ran away from home and moved to Olympia.
Eventually everyone came back. One of them had a compilation tape called "I Have No Friends, I'm Drunk." It wasn't a professionally done thing. TDK tape, handwritten etc. One of the songs was a mislabelled "Big Brains." I loved that song. (The other side MAY have had 'Apple Jacks', can't be sure after all this time.)
For twenty something years, it linger

Matt, you're close on the Adrian and ZZ influences, but at the time, I was listening to a *lot* of Gang of Four, Mission of Burma and XTC.

@spohlso -- Thanks for the amusing comment! Great story and Holy crap back at ya! FYI, we did a one-night, 25th-ish reunion in Olympia to benefit Haiti back in March (Facebook: Indie Rockers For Haiti). If you search YouTube using Wimps Haiti, you can see us sort of recreating "She's Got What I Want" (aka "Big Brains") as geezers. - best wishes, RonWimp (guitar)
