Watusi(US)
Watusi is the Reggae/Worldbeat tribe of 10 musicians from the Caribbean, Afrika and US that has pioneered reggae and Worldbeat from Texas to Hawaii since 1982. This band mixes all styles of reggae, from roots to dancehall, with Afrikan riddims, Latin, funk, jazz and has released 4 albums on World Beatnik Records. Founded by Jimi Towry and based in Dallas, Texas, they have won numerous awards and are one of the most established, respected reggae groups in America.
Watusi chief and founder Jimi Towry met and was mentored by the late great Wailer Peter Tosh in 1976, and was inspired and put on the reggae mission by Tosh himself. After living and playing in Jamaica for a year, Jimi formed Watusi in 1982, the pioneering reggae and worldbeat band in Dallas, Texas and southwest region. Played and toured Jamaica, Hawaii, Cancun and Mexico, and across the US. Plenty concerts and festivals, we've played with most all of the top Reggae and worldbeat artists over the years.
We have played live since 1982, from Hawaii to Jamaica and Mexico, and coast to coast in US.
We love the festivals especially and our biggest show was with Ziggy Marley in Dallas' West End in 1992 with 45,000 fans in attendance- still holding record for largest reggae concert ever in Dallas. Love Spring Breakin in Cancun and Negril.
All styles of reggae, from Bob Marley to dancehall reggae, as well as a Worldbeat mix of: soca, zouk, Afrikan artists like Baaba Maal, Youssou Ndour, Salif Keita, Cuban salsa, Brazilian samba, jazz, funk, rock, ska, etc...
Everything from Afrikan drums to synths to harmonica.
