Story behind the song
The second movement of Schafer's debut piano quintet technically contains three separate sections. The first of these sections is in E major, following a similar rhythmic pattern as the Moderato (1st) movement. This is immediately followed by a B section in B-flat major, showing more of a piano lead with chromatic strings and woodwinds underneath. The third section is a recapitulation of the first, and reprises the melodic line.
