Story behind the song
Conceived and composed in 2009, this first movement of Schafer's untraditional rendering of a debut piano quintet proves to be a highlight in the composer's repertoire of completed works. Starting out slow, with a slight atonal bend, the piece is a single, growing crescendo. By the middle of the first movement, the tempo picks up to show a beautifully balanced mixture of a driving strings section, fluttering woodwinds, and a simple but powerful piano line.
Originally written for piano, viola, violoncello, flute and oboe (as presented in this recording).
