Story behind the song
In September this year we spent 2 months in a friend's place in Switzerland - the French-speaking part - as well as some time walking in France and visiting friends near Paris and in Amsterdam, and attending a wedding in Germany. Apart from our 2 weeks in Amsterdam and the week in Germany, we were very much immersed in a French-language environment. Tobin commented at one stage that it would be interesting to hear what sort of music my time in Europe would produce - and the pressure was on to start writing (in a good way!). I wrote 4 or 5 songs in Switzerland - 3 of which are either finished or near completion. This is the first. It's about the joy I have in being in a linguistic environment where I'm limited by my language skills - I understand a lot of what's going on around me in French (more in German) - TV shows, conversations in the supermarket, announcements at railway stations etc - but there's always a good 50% I don't understand. I really enjoy the sense of freedom that gives me. The song's also about the cultural differences - "do I offer my cheek, do I offer my hand?". We met up with MJer Blaky Smith (Marc) who lives just over the French border near where we were staying in Switzerland and met up with him for a great day in the Jura countryside. He will be posting his version of this tomorrow - very different in sound and meaning to this, but definitely a terrific listen - i seemed very appropriate to have a French language version at MJ as well. Here it is: ("Sur le Sable") "Looking for signs of life" became a theme in my Swiss songs - the next one is called "Signs Of Life". Almost forgot to mention, the drumming here is by Mike Watkins (kevmikwa) - I'm sure he'll make some comments about the details further down the page. Mike is a dream to collaborate with - always supportive, always producing killer drum tracks, and a nice guy to boot. Hope you enjoy this. Neil
