Acoustic folk rock, singer-songwriter
I've been singing since I was able to gurgle but only playing the guitar since I was 11, when my "father homeward came one day and gave to me a toy" (Thanks, Tom). That was about 50 years ago give or take a few months and I've been singing, playing and writing songs on and off, during all that time.

Story behind the song
I wrote this song during a family holiday in Normandy. One day we followed the road down to the coast and ended up at Utah Beach. American's will know that Utah Beach is an impossibility (as Utah is a landlocked state). Watching my two sons playing with their buckets and spades in the sand and dodging the waves I was struck by the dramatic contrast between now and 60 years ago. Mostly I used my J200 on this track, with some overdubbing using my Martin D25 12-string
Lyrics
UTAH BEACH (Berk) Copyright 1994 Maple Leaf Media Ltd How was our holiday? Did we have a good time? Two days it rained But then it was fine Where did we go? And what did we see? We glimpsed the past On Utah Beach The children played And sometimes they fought With buckets & spades Without a thought Too young to comprehend Why people even care About a strip of sand Called Utah Beach I saw the film The Longest Day We all felt the thrilled There was no pain The Hollywood heroes hit the beach we all felt stirred by John Wayne's speach And now we have our armchair wars Fought at a safe distance from these shores But will we sit among the dunes And remember In years to come? Fathers and sons A generation before fought for their lives on the Normandy shore the clarity of hindsight now questions the need because the threat has passed On Utah Beach In times of war What is the choice? To speak out against The common voice I only know I could not make the sacrifice Let the children play On Utah Beach Let the children play On Utah Beach Let the children play On Utah Beach
