Story behind the song
In certain spiritual traditions, God is referred to as the Beloved, the Lover, the Goddess, and so on. Life is sometimes referred to as a tavern, and the heart as a mirror, into which one is forced to look closely.
Lyrics
Every So Often the Goddess (v1) Every so often the Goddess Storms into a tavern of drunks Who are quietly nursing a grievance All muttering into their cups Exchanging complaints about how bad life feels Choking on dry bones of long-ago meals Chorus Look now, she's carrying scissors And spreading her sewing things round She intends to embroider each of you dears To the hem of her long, holy gown (v2) Every so often the Goddess Kicks over the tavern's bar stools Smiles at the wild scrambling Of a room full of jesters and fools She locks the windows and doors to the halls Forcing everyone to face bright mirrored walls Bridge So loosen up darlings Relax, keep your heads Because if She can't pull you Like smooth silken threads Through the eye of her needle She'll drag by the hair And kicking and screaming You'll all be stitched there Skilfully knotted and lovingly bound Fixed to the hem of her long, holy gown Chorus Look now, she's carrying scissors And spreading her sewing things round She intends to embroider each of you dears To the hem of her long, holy gown Repeat chorus Outro Every so often the Goddess Bursts into the tavern at night Why not rush from your bar stools in welcome And leap through the needle's eye ©2009 Donna Devine
