Lyrics
The Ballad of John Doe
Last night two friends came out a bar
and they were going home
They walked along the old canal
but they were not alone
Some guys who'd seen them in the bar
Followed without making noise
in their pockets their hands made fists
Said "we don't like them gay boys,
"we don't like them gay boys"
Then on the corner, by the bridge
they caught up with the two
They pinned them down, grabbed them tight
and beat them through and through
Then when the blood was pouring out
John Doe, one man, not strong
said "leave those guys alone man,"
"they didn't do no wrong
"they didn't do no wrong."
The hatred turned towards John Doe,
they said "well who are you?
They pushed him and they hissed some words
he couldn't think what to do
They beat John Doe until he fell
and then they kicked him too
And when they fin'ly walked away
he did not move no more
he did not move no more
Then after all the deeds were done
an ambulance was called
It came up howling very fast
but when it left it crawled
The boys said they were sorry
they didn't mean to kill John Doe
They blamed it all on circumstance
they couldn't explain it, no
they couldn't explain it, no
(harmonica solo)
Intolerance is something that
won't die easily
Wherever men are frightened
it'll be their company
If only one man stands up
he may fall on his face
But if we all as one will stand
we'll fight for a better place
we'll fight for a better place
