Outside of Before it is known as "Engagement Dance." Only couples married or betrothed may engage in this dance. In a sense this would be impossible, as in Before the betrothal ring is unknown and couples become betrothed by engaging in the dance.

The Engagement Dance is also vulgarly referred to as "The Nose-Blowing Dance," since it is considered rude not to cry discretely if one or more of the couples enters the dance for their first time. The melody is also used in song and numerous comical and ribald versions are extant. The couples touch only one hand and often spin away in a courtly manner.
