Story behind the song
I was music director and actor in the play "There Should Be Roses" by John Williams back in 2005. Four days before opening night, I got an inspiration for a song based on the closing scene in the play; one in which the lead character (an 80-plus year old man) is at the grave of his 12-years-departed wife on their 60th wedding anniversary, reminding himself and her of the perfect Sunday afternoon they spent together in the spring of '39. The song lay dormant for about four years after it was performed to open the play each of the eight nights it ran. This year, the song was pulled out of mothballs and performed at a eulogy for my dear friend's father. He and his wife were contemporaries of a slightly later period, so I changed the lyric to the spring of '59 for their sake. This recording was a single take in my studio with Scott and Emily looking on. No studio tricks, purely organic...
Lyrics
Its a perfect Sunday afternoon in the spring of 59 A picnic basket full of love and a bottle of red wine Theres a hundred-year-old shade tree and a sweet breeze singing softly Your perfumes hanging on the air, and neither of us with a care You know I think it might be a good time for a kiss You see I dont need no money, dont need no fancy cars, no And I dont want no party, just put that to bed Cuz there should be roses instead Thirty years have come and gone, but it seems more like thirty days Time flies by like 99 and in all the time that youve been mine Im still helplessly held captive by your gaze High school graduations, grandkids and congratulations Our children all have grown and gone Good Lord, has it really been that long since that perfect day way back in 59? You see I dont need no money, dont need no fancy cars, no And I dont want no party, just put that to bed Cuz there should be roses instead I never saw it coming; I never figured Id have to live without you Its like someone stole my breath away but they left me breathing anyway Now all Im doin is just bidin my time Sixty years tomorrow you and I got married Youve been gone for twelve long years, but I know youre waiting for me, dear to break these chains and make my way on back to you You see I dont need no money, dont need no fancy cars, no And I dont want no party, just put that to bed Cuz there should be roses And I dont need no money, dont need no fancy cars, no And I dont want no party, just put that to bed Cuz there should be roses instead There should be roses instead There should be roses
