Cosmos II is the pseudonym of Alan Marscher, a professor of astronomy at Boston University. Usually, he performs alone on guitar and vocals. The songs are all originals composed and copyrighted by Marscher. Some are "science nerd" songs that Cosmos II performs to science students at B.U. The majority, though, are just general songs about life, love, the pursuit of happiness and meaning, and various other random topics. Most of the songs are in English, while some are in Russian, the country where Marscher's wife, Svetlana hails from. The style is a mixture of rock, pop, and folk - what is often termed "adult contemporary." Many are humorous - e.g., "Medical Miracle" about how Viagra has revitalized a lot of middle-aged men or "Relatively Weird" about the wonders and perils of traveling around at near-light speeds. Others are philosophical, such as "All from Nothing?" about how the universe came to exist and "Elusive Truth" that asks whether absolute truth can exist. Some are just plain love songs - an example is "Together or Apart" - and others are love-is-difficult songs, like "Winter's Darkness." Laughs and tears for everyone! Marscher recorded all of the songs himself on a small digital recorder. He doesn't have loads of free time, so he hasn't worked hard enough to remove imperfections, add a drum pattern, etc. But most songs have harmony and are at least at the "demo" level of quality. Friends who have listened to them have neither gone mad nor rushed the CD to the local recycling center. More importantly to Cosmos II, Marscher can listen to them without wretching in horror over the slight mis-timings of the different tracks and other imperfections.

Lyrics
1. The beauty just stood there brushing her long, brown hair And I didn't even care that it's not polite to stare She didn't blink an eye as I passed her by I didn't dare to try to impress her with a lie And so I acted cool, followed the unspoken rule To avoid playing the fool toward such a precious jewel 2. That's how it occurred, she didn't say a word And so I just inferred that her interest wasn't stirred So I quickened my pace, hastened back to my place And tried hard to erase the memory of her face But I dreamed later that night that she again was in my sight Like the sun she shone so bright I was blinded by the light Chorus 1: Would I be excused if I acted too enthused? Would she feel abused or simply be amused? I was silent all the while, dumbstruck by her style Then her lips curled in a smile, and said "resistance is futile" 3. What did that dream mean? It remained to be seen So I returned to the scene where again she was standing But I did not forget that it's better not to get To the point where you let a girl treat you like a pet So I just walked on by, acting as a guy Who doesn't live or die based on whether she says "hi" Chorus 2: So I vowed to persist in my effort to resist Adding to my list of girls I should have kissed I was silent all the while but 10 feet seemed like a mile Then her lips curled in a smile and said "resistance is futile" 4. I knew not her intent, so I asked her what she meant Then a most alluring scent became quite insistent I was cast under her spell, in love with her I fell Though I really couldn't tell if this would turn out well She took me by the hand and led me to a land Where the water meets the sand, exactly as she had planned Chorus 3: I imagined us in bed but into the sea she fled To water above my head, and I followed where she led I was silent all the while, captivated by her style As she continued to smile and say "resistance is futile" Chorus 4: I went down for the third time, my entire life played in my mind And I realized that I'm stuck inside this rhyme Always falling for her guile, her irresistible style I'll gaze upon her smile and know resistance is futile
