Story behind the song
Memorized rote from Chad Mitchell Trio; then in 1981 was in Alaska's midnight sun, alone except for a rag-picker, who spoke Russian, so I sang this for him... He was moved to tears, and told me how this song was popular when he was born, when HIS father died doing forced-labor for Stalin's canal linking the Volga and the Don.
