Story behind the song
In my wife's genealogy, her great-grandma shot her great -grandpa. He was so mean that the community put pressure on the legal system and they let her go home. In deference to her the community said he died from lead poisoning. The next generation only knew that until my wife's genealogical research found newspaper articles from the old days that told the real story.
Lyrics
Chorus He died from lead poisoning, that’s what they said in town They never talked about the way his woman shot him down He was so bad no one was sad, they’re glad he’s not around He died from lead poisoning, it put him in the ground Verse 1 Out on a farm there was a man, so mean in every way He beat his wife, abused his kids, he hurt them every day The locals knew what he was like, you often heard them say If there’s any justice in this world, some day he’s gonna pay Verse 2 One day his wife had reached a point where she could take no more She went into her room and got the pistol from the drawer As he sat there in the kitchen she shot him from the door She watched him die, she didn’t cry as he lay on the floor Verse 3 They had a trial, it was required, it didn’t last too long The judge and lawyers made a deal, they said she’d done no wrong She went back home to raise her kids, their family was strong They never spoke of Dad again, so glad that he was gone
